I love a good mystery book, and The Bones Behind the Glass fills that perfectly. I've never read or seen a setup like this before, which made the book very compelling.

The book starts with a throwaway case to set up the character world and setting, wh I love a good mystery book, and The Bones Behind the Glass fills that perfectly. I've never read or seen a setup like this before, which made the book very compelling.

The book starts with a throwaway case to set up the character world and setting, which drew me immediately in. But once the titular bones behind the glass at Paddy's pub were introduced, I was hooked.

Renard does a great job of setting up the mystery and then slowly drip-feeding information throughout the rest of the book. There are a lot of other action, cases, and plots to drive the story forward while the core mystery unravels. This book is less of a "whodunit" and more of an exploration into the mind of a detective as a case slowly consumes him. The prose is well written, and the descriptions of the world and setting are strong. While their page time was short, I also enjoyed the cast of side characters. There was enough detail to make the world feel alive without being overwhelmed by names to remember. I particularly liked Snyder, a young, up-and-coming German Shepherd detective.

Elijah himself is a fascinating character to take this journey with. He's likable, but flawed; tormented by the loss of his brother. When it comes down to it, there's really no reason why he should care about what happened to these bones at all, but his gut tells him to pursue it and find out more. The deeper and deeper Elijah digs, the more obsessed he gets. He's constantly praised as a great detective, and as he gets deeper into the case, we see that persona slowly slip. He starts going off the books, mishandling the collection of evidence, or even procuring it illegally to push the case forward. Throughout the story, Elijah gets away with a lot. I would have liked to see some of his actions have some larger consequences, but ultimately, that sentiment didn't affect my enjoyment of the book.

Renard has done an excellent job writing an interesting, gripping story that will have to turning the pages to discover the mystery of The Bones Behind the Glass. ...more

Ones that jump on the page, that feel like people you could meet in real life. Skyler and Ryan, as well as the whole host of characters in Gravitational Pull, are unequivocally that.

We are introduced to our main character at a loving moment, setting the book off to a strong start. Then over the course of several hundred pages, I found myself praying it would stay that way and that they would get a happy ending.

Like any relationship, Sky and Ry's can be rocky at times, with many issues stemming from Sky's challenging past relationships. Through the course of the book, Ty Fox doesn't pull punches when covering tough topics of emotional and physical abuse, rape, sexual assault, violence, and fractured family dynamics, but he does so while covering them with grace. For anyone who has faced similar challenges in life, this book may be difficult to read at times. Possibly even overwhelming. However, there is a great deal to take away from it all, and reading Skyler work through them is worthwhile.

While many will relate to Sky, I found myself particularly drawn to Ryan. A caring, handsome coyote that would do just about anything to protect our main character. What's not to love? His struggle throughout the story is initially less visible. Neglecting his needs by putting everyone else's first is something that resonated deeply within me. I really enjoyed the nuance Ty Fox brought to his character. He's easy to love from the get-go, but by the book's end, it becomes clear he is just as flawed as anyone else.

Ultimately, I feel Gravitational Pull is about the support we give one another and how even if one side needs more, it doesn't mean that the other doesn't need it too. It's about family, found and traditional, about acceptance and love. It's about healing. Skylar and Ryan have one of those relationships that you want to work, no matter what they need to do to make it right. That's what I ended loving most about this story. The love Ty and Sky have for each other radiates from the pages.

Gravitational Pull is an easy five stars, and it is an incredible debut from a new author. I eagerly await what Ty Fox has in store for us next. ...more

There are some books you really don't know the impact they will have on you until you finish them. A Portrait for Tomorrow is one of those books.

The story starts at a funeral, and we are introduced to our cast of characters in a process of grieving, each one in their own way. Our main character, Gerry, who has little love lost for his grandma (for whom the funeral is for), finds the eyes of an orange fox in a sea of golden lions, and thus sparks the romantic relationship that is the pinnacle of the story.

At its core, A Portrait for Tomorrow is a slice-of-life story, and a beautifully written one at that. Raynarde's detailed prose brings life to the characters and the world without ever feeling excessive. The rich details transfer into the characters, too. While reading, it felt like I was getting to know real people, not just words on a page. When done as well as it is here, I can't help but vividly imagine the scenes playing out like a movie in my head. Not all books can invoke that feeling for me, which speaks volumes for how fleshed out these characters are.

While the book focuses on the smaller aspects of life, like Gerry and Mikey's initial flirting, first date, and the progression of their relationship, it doesn't mean the book is left without some drama to drive the story. From the loss of Gerry's mother at a young age, his father's developed alcoholism ripples throughout the story, adding additional complications at some of the worst times. And Gerry can be one insecure lion from time to time, adding some speed bumps here and there. None of the conflicts felt contrived or forced into the story; instead, they stem from character flaws, once again adding to a sense of character realism that all authors strive for, yet many fall short on.

Gerry's mother was a well-known artist in the community, and after discovering a set of unfinished paintings at his cousin Roman's house, Gerry, an artist himself, is convinced to finish them for an art show hosted at the local museum. This plot line helps tie several others together and acts as a connective thread throughout the novel. It shows up throughout the book and gives the reader (and Gerry) something to look forward to.

I think I felt just about every emotion while reading A Portrait for Tomorrow. This is a massive testament to Raynarde's ability to weave happy moments with gut-wrenching ones, while telling a story of love, of struggle, of loss, but most importantly, one of hope.

I loved getting to know Gerry and Miky and couldn't help but root for them. Their love and relationship had me swooning in certain scenes. When the book ended, I was sad that my time with them had come to an end. It's hard to say goodbye when you get to know characters like this, even in just a few hundred pages.

There is a lot to take away from Portrait for Tomorrow, and it's a book that's going to stick with me for a long time. ...more
