When not reading or writing, I enjoy being outdoors, either walking, cycling, kayaking, or skiing; or indoors binge-watching sci-fi series. I came to writing late in life and still regret that none of my teachers in middle- or high-school ever told me to do some creative writing.

My first book, The Forgotten Isle (Middle Grade fantasy) came about as a project that my son, Colin, and I thought up while he was in middle school. My second book, Into the Outside, is a YA dystopian sci-fi. Into the Yellow Zone, and Under the Mountain (Books 2 and 3 in the trilogy) came out in 2017.

My time travel short story "Time's Anchor" (2016, Kindle and Audible) is a story of love, friendship and life’s joys and sorrows, set against the backdrop of a myster

Sometimes all I wind up with is creating backstory for characters, especially those that don't really need it. Of course, that is just an industrious form of writer's block! But it does keep me writing, even if nothing I write makes it into the final edit.(less)

I was lucky because I began my career straight out of college working for a national book store chain (yes kids, there used to be STORES that sold physical books!) Learn about what editors and publishers want. Learn about writing; this is where spelling DOES count… and grammar, and tense, and punctuation, and word order. All those rules your English teachers tried to teach you… PLEASE learn them. A great plot with awesome characters will NOT make a good book if it’s badly written.

Second, read everything you can. Don’t even think about becoming a writer if you haven’t spent your lifetime being a reader. Read in and out of your genre. Read the top sellers because your manuscript will be compared to those. Read the Classics – ok read SOME of the Classics. Some are just awful. I’m sorry but some of the “great” books are unreadable in this day and age. Don’t get me started on the Classics that I hated.(less)

Melissa Thank you for the friend request! I will deffinatly check out you book, and i look forward to reading it. I too enjoyed the Hunger Games series, but didn't care too much for the last one. Found it to be a total let down. The movie however i enjoyed, but the start could of been a bit faster paced :)

Barbara Hi! I like YA and enjoy people of like minds. I see that you write YA as well and think it is wonderful to have such a gift! Yesterday I spoke with a person when I was working that goes to SCI FI Conventions all over the world. He said they are some of the most amazing people on the planet. I think there are amazing people in all fields but love creativity.
