Awaken, Chapter 1

The multi-coloured glint sparkled in my eye, but I didn’t mind the momentary blindness. I was too deliriously happy to care. Weightless was how I felt, like floating on a cloud of affection and contentment. Nothing could spoil the high. The four of us stood in the kitchen of the Pearson’s home. Cassie, Bec and their mother Beth were around me, admiring my engagement ring. Cassie had my left hand in both of hers and was inspecting the ring on my finger like a master craft jeweller. “Marquise cut diamond, pear shaped rubies on either side and would you check out that white gold vintage setting. The hand crafted detail is exquisite! Three carats?” She looked up at me with a business like expression on her face.“Four,” I felt my cheeks blush with pride.Bec sucked in her breath and let out a low whistle, and I noticed Beth gripped the edge of the counter a little tighter. “Look at that sparkle, I wonder how many facets it has?” Cassie gushed. “Vaughan must have spent a fortune. It looks custom designed. Did he have it made when he was in Paris?” Her face did not lift from the ring on my finger as she asked. There was a momentary flutter in my stomach before I answered. “He bought it in an antique store when he was away.” This much was true, although not on his working holiday to Paris as Cassie believed, but in a little out of the way shop in Russia when he was with Cleopatra. Their mission was to capture Clara, Vaughan’s maker, and take her to Egypt for punishment of the crime of making him blood drinker against his will. Unfortunately, the Creator didn’t uphold her end of the bargain of giving Vaughan back his mortality, which meant he was still doomed to a life in the shadows as a vampire. As a result of what he had to do, our lives were now placed in further danger. Clara was not only Vaughan’s maker, but the maternal mother of his friend Anna; the one who told us how to find the Creator. “It is stunning Nic, I am so jealous.” Cassie said as she tilted my hand from side to side, checking the reflection of my diamond in the overhead down light.“It’s lovely dear,” Beth commented as she put her hand on my shoulder in a soothing way. “Your Mum must be very happy.”The smile had not left my face since Vaughan and I became engaged. Any mention of us, my ring or how getting married made others as happy, left me all warm inside, and I wanted to scream with joy. It was something I had never felt before, and it was a welcome feeling. “She absolutely loves Vaughan. He asked Mum for permission to marry me, and that won him even more brownie points. Mark is coming home in a few weeks to meet him, so Mum wants to organise the engagement party for when he is here.”“Aww,” Bec and Cassie chimed in unison as they clutched their hands to their chests. “I can picture Julia getting all emotional when he asked her.” Cassie said.I laughed as I tried to imagine the scene. “He went to the hospital to see her. She had just finished in theatre and was wearing scrubs at the time.”“So how did he propose?” Bec gushed. “Did he get down on one knee and declare his undying love for you?”My hands shook, and I felt the emotion swelling inside as I recalled the moment. “Vaughan arranged a private yacht on Sydney Harbour, with butlers and champagne, and fireworks on the Harbour Bridge. It was romantic and perfect and even better than I could have imagined.”Cassie’s eyes misted over, and she blinked the tears back as her lips pursed together.“So that is the reason I came here. I wanted to ask you both a favour.”Bec and Cassie gave each other a sideways glance. They knew what was coming, Bec’s lip twitched to the side in anticipation.“Will you both be my bridesmaids?”The sisters jumped up and down screaming excitedly, and then crushed me to them, joining in the throng. “Yes! Of course, we will Nic.” Bec screamed.Metal scraping on the tiled floor broke the happy occasion. Justin had pushed his chair back and stood from the table. I hadn’t even noticed he was in the room when I arrived. He stalked to the sink and dropped his coffee cup into it with a loud clank before he left the room, his bedroom door slammed shut a moment later. The sound made me flinch, and everyone stayed still for a tense minute. “What’s his problem?” Bec asked to no one in particular.“Rebecca.” Beth scolded and shook her head. “Leave him be.”“I’ll go talk to him,” I offered and headed down the hallway. My legs felt weak as I stood outside Justin’s room. I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. “Justin. It’s Nicola.”“Go away!” His voice shouted through the door before there was a loud thump.I opened the door and let myself in ignoring his request. “Hey.”Justin sat up quickly on the bed and put his iPod earphones in and pretended to ignore me. He turned his face away from me. Ignoring his queue for me to leave, I sat beside him on the bed and tugged on the cord, the plug fell from his ear. “What’s up?” I asked.Justin moved further away, and he avoided looking at me. “Are you seriously asking me that?” His voice was full of a painful sarcasm and made my stomach twinge with guilt.Instinctively my hands clasped together, and I covered my ring. “Yeah, I guess I am.”“Leave me alone,” he shook his head and rested his elbows on his knees.A knot formed in my chest at the rejection and hurt I knew I was inflicting. “Is that what you want?” Justin’s eyes met mine, and I saw the ache in them. “You know what I want, for years you have known,” he shouted, the loudness of his voice  made me wince. “You don’t need to keep flaunting it.” With that, he put the ear plugs back in his ears and turned away from me, pretending I didn’t exist, shutting me out completely.Again I tugged at the ear phones and commanded his attention. “Justin, please don’t make this hard for me.”“We wouldn’t want to make Princess Nicola upset,” his eyes were cold and vicious as he stood and paced the room. “What do you want me to say that I’m happy for you and Vaughan? Well, guess what. I’m not happy. The only woman I have ever loved, for as long as I can remember, is getting married to someone else. You are marrying the wrong guy. So I’m sorry if I’m not gushing over your stupid ring. You are making the biggest mistake of your life, and being incredibly naive about it.” Justin took the iPod from his pocket and threw it against the wall. A shower of fragments exploded across the room as he yelled with rage.
His words stung like a slap to the face, and it took a few moments for the shock to wear off. When I finally shook it off, I stood unsteadily and left the room, continuing down the hall and out the front door in a mechanical haze. The only thing I was subconsciously aware of around me was an electric buzz sound that tuned out what had just happened. It wasn’t until I was driving down the street that I realised Bec and Cassie were standing in the front yard of their house calling out my name.
