I identify with Helen Keller. I wasn't born deaf and blind, but being the second of six children born in quick succession, no one ever bonded with me. Not being bonded with, I dissociated, couldn't connect, and failed first and second grade.

A psychologist concluded that I didn't have sufficient attention span – "So don't press him to achieve;" this was the first in a series of betrayals by our societal mental health system's one-size-fits-all, cooky-cutter approach to wellness: I've been admired for two hundred dollars per hour, empathized with, chatted with, had my statements repeated back to me in different ways, my thoughts identified as "cognitive distortions" that I should "remember not to think," diagnosed schizophrenic and medicate I identify with Helen Keller. The result was "tardive tics" –spasms so severe that I could not think or function. Oh, and I've had my brain x-rayed while being "observed" for two weeks at a (resort) mental hospital.

However, with all the "therapy," I never developed a relationship. Eventually, I quit seeking help and began looking to myself: Observing what David does while remaining open, curious, and impartial as to the source of what he does and its effects. Though it often felt like throwing myself against stone walls and barbed fences, I began discovering feelings I never knew existed and how these feelings relate to relationships. I quit studying Psychology and started learning from the phenomena and dynamics that engulfed me: What created and perpetuated these dynamics? I began finding direction and seeing change: I could see that I reacted this much, but not as much as I had in the past, that reactions reinforced my inherited identity – without them, self-defeating beliefs and their associated conditioning dissolved.

People with whom I could connect with increased meaning came out of my web of relations. More important, I think, than the improved relations was the orientation to myself that occurred when I was sincerely liked for my identity. I sensed myself coming into life-changing awareness, not knowing what that change would mean. These were not "coping strategies" but permanent, constructive, and evolving changes – baselines I could build upon. My two books, TheSelf, and The Inner Space Traveler, introduce what I now call Metaphysical Psychology.
