Ex writer/director of promos and commercials, loving writing for the writing and not the pay - which is fortunate since I rarely get any!

I enjoy reading and writing the impossible made possible and in my writing use the vitality of cross-genre and magic realism to explore as many major themes as I can cram in, without slowing the storyline or plot development. It's what makes me happy and keeps me relatively sane. My son, when only five, asked me 'How can I be happy'? My answer was 'If what you are doing isn't working, stop doing it and do something else.' Not very clever perhaps, but anything else is madness.

For me, it's when I'm churning over a plot point, a character reaction, or whether the story is worth writing. I get the latter a lot, as a drawer full of unfinished novels can testify!

But, if you are experiencing 'block', then stop writing what you are writing and write something else, anything else. A shopping list will do. Anything. Then leave it alone for a time. Come back and change it a little, then go away again. Rinse and repeat. Eventually you will get so sick of the shopping list that your subconscious will stop playing the diva and get on with the original story. Works for me!

I’M A PUBLISHED ‘POET’!

Rarely have I tried to write poetry. It always seemed pompous, pretentious and prone to hyperbole. I can do that with novels and short stories of course, but poetry conjures up images of effete Victorians with flowing, rather damp locks (from the effort) and limp wrists, (although I know one or two proper poets who would punch my lights out at the idea). My wrists remain firm and my locks, althoug

Graham Chapman
“I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper. I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.”

Frank Herbert
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
Frank Herbert, Dune

Harry Harrison
“We must be as stealthy as rats in the wainscoting of their society. It was easier in the old days, of course, and society had more rats when the rules were looser, just as old wooden buildings have more rats than concrete buildings. But there are rats in the building now as well. Now that society is all ferrocrete and stainless steel there are fewer gaps in the joints. It takes a very smart rat indeed to find these openings. Only a stainless steel rat can be at home in this environment...”
Harry Harrison, The Stainless Steel Rat

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.”
Marcus Tullius Cicero

“I like people too much or not at all. I've got to go down deep, to fall into people, to really know them.”
Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath
