I read this while on holiday in Cape Cod with my adult children. It was all too close for comfort, but there was so much I could relate to and feel. This might be a challenging book for some because of the coices the protagonist makes, but it's just ...more

I love books that have a strong woman up front and centre, and this is the best example of that from the last century for me. It also manages to keep humour within adversity, and find beauty in sadness. Garmus is a genius.
“It was the human condition: the need to know the worst, the destructive desire to see how it feels when you hit rock bottom.”

“don’t want to talk about it,’ Véronique said, smiling gently at him. ‘I don’t want it to be part of my present. It’s the past. I’m sorry that I didn’t have the strength to tell you before. Instead, I ran. Not from you, though. From the memories.”

“Parlabane found the word 'pro-active' enormously useful, as it immediately exposed the speaker as an irredeemable arsehole, whatever previous impression might have been given. Once upon a time, he remembered, people and companies just did things. But that ceased to be impressive enough, and for a while they 'actively' did things. Now they 'pro-actively' did things, but it was still the same bloody things that they were doing when they just plain old did things. Meaningless wank-language.”
