“Standard throwing techniques are divided into waza executed from a standing position (tachi waza) and sacrifice techniques executed while falling down (sutemi waza). There are three types of standing techniques, depending on the primary part of the body used to make the throw: hip throws (koshi waza), hand or arm throws (te waza) and foot or leg throws (ashi waza). Sacrifice throws are divided into those to the rear (ma sutemi waza) and those to the side (yoko sutemi waza).”
