I always wanted to read this book. The topic of pre columbian civilizations always has been one of my favorites. It was difficult to find, but I managed to get a copy shipped to Chile, where I am from. Weirdly enough, despite dealing a lot with both I always wanted to read this book. The topic of pre columbian civilizations always has been one of my favorites. It was difficult to find, but I managed to get a copy shipped to Chile, where I am from. Weirdly enough, despite dealing a lot with both Andean and Mesoamerican cultures, the text has not been translated to Spanish.

It is written in an easy way, not a lot of jargon, with intellectual rigour. It defended a perspective that is shared by most historians but for largely political and institutional reasons, has not diffused into text books or popular culture. The idea of backward "Indians" living peacefully off the land and never thinking about anything we consider important, is attacked and dismantled on this book.

In a way, it serves as generalist introduction to the concept, by summarizing some of the puzzling findings that have led historians and archaeologists to rethink the population and development level of the Americas.

While his thesis was mainly that there was more to pre-columbian societies than the typical "Aztecs-Maya-Inca" cliché and that their development level was not necessarily lesser than the Europeans, only different, it did not delve deeper into some of the most interesting implications of his theory (What happened to the areas of Central America or Colombia that were most throughly depopulated and even today, lack indigenous cultures. The Muisca dissapeared, as did the inhabitants of Costa Rica or Nicaragua, that left far more artifacts than the Amazonians), it also left a lot of ground uncovered, sometimes repeating the same thinkings across chapters, not always advancing through ideas in a logical way. Regarding the Maya, it left me wanting a bit more. But it compensated that shortcoming with the attention given to the Amazonians, and the undisputable evidence that the Amazon used to be much more populated (But crucially, in a way where the forest itself was used for sustenance, instead of the "Eurasian" model of chopping it down to plant crops), especulating on the reasons why such findings are politically inconvenient.

The only thing of this book that bugged me (As the others, are purely intellectual disagreements or question points, that don't diminish the quality of the text) is the strangeness for me, of seeing this discussed from the outside. To put it bluntly, it looked like a "gringo" perspective of it. Even as the author is cautious with this, most of the voice is given to American or European researchers. A certain level of "Anthropological Distance" can be sensed on this book. An example of this bias comes with the defensive use of the term "Indian". Save a few people, in Latin American public consciousness, the term "Indian" is associated with the characters in classical Western movies. The indigenous are either called simple "Indigenous" (Not "Native American") or with the names they use for themselves.

Latin America is not an "other". We are modern, industrial, urbanized countries. People have their own opinion on the matter of the book. My only real problem with this text is that they could have (and maybe they must had) included more local perspectives on what they were arguing about. ...more
