Always a misfit, Stephanie Lawton writes twisted romance that tugs the heart strings then punches you in the gut.

She has a tendency to psychoanalyze people, which comes in handy when creating character profiles. She has a fascination with teacher-student relationships, bullies, psychics, doomsday preppers and larger-than-life characters.

Making readers squirm is her greatest pleasure.

I began writing it immediately after finishing "Shelf Life," but then life turned upside down - I'm in a different city, different state, different part of the country, different job, different spouse!
So the direction I was going when I started it just doesn't work for me anymore. The characters are talking, but none of them are moving in the same direction. I think, instead of trying to get them to conform to what I *think* I want them to do, I should just let them loose and then tie it together later. It feels more authentic that way, thought it's much more work than sticking to a predetermined outline.
I've also got ideas for at least five more books rolling around in my head. There's just not enough time for all of them. I see some tie-ins and collaborations in the future. (less)

People were freaking out about a lot of things and the doomsday prepper movement was gaining traction. I combined the two and set it in a fictionalized version of an area in which I used to live. We're a bit removed from that now, but the political climate is still (obviously) intensely charged. I'm sure that will factor into the sequel! (less)

What I’m Reading: Historical Fiction

[image error]Completely by accident, this past month’s reads have included two historical fiction novels, though they’re very different. The first was for book club at work. The Boston Girl by Anita Diamant starts around the turn of the last century in and around Boston when it was teeming with immigrants. In this case, the family is Jewish. However, you could probably insert nearly any European/S

“Reading is one way I cope. I go somewhere else for a while and submerge myself in the character's problems instead of my mine.”
Stephanie Lawton, Want

“We don't always get what we want. And sometimes, when we do, it's not worth the price.”
Stephanie Lawton, Want

“We carry secrets under our skin like shrapnel. Our surface wounds heal, but the damage festers underneath while we worry what tiny pieces will work their way to the surface for the world to see.”
