I've been writing for a long time, mostly in the science-fiction and fantasy genres. After a career spent working in medical research (briefly) and then in an NHS microbiology lab, I've now taken early retirement and have time to spare for writing and publishing my work.
I like poetry, particularly Yeats and Walter de la Mare, the art of Alphonse Mucha and the Pre-Raphaelites, and folk music, particularly long ballads about sex, death and the supernatural. I dabble in many kinds of crafts, including cross stitch and beading, and collect press-moulded and British studio glass, especially Okra, and tarot cards. All of the above may flavour and influence my work.
I live in the UK with an avid collector of books and CDs.
My partner and I run Catha

Still here, still writing

I see that it's been five years since my last post. I'm still writing but I haven't published anything since The Beauty of Our Weapons. The fifth volume of the Anna and Zenni saga is ready to go, only waiting on a cover. That's what slows me down, as I can't do artwork and it's hard to find and keep suitable artists.
For Cathaven Press I've learnt how to format print and e-books. We publish Occult Read more of this blog post »

I DNFed this. I read the first in the series as I'm fond of spiders, but I really didn't care enough about octopussies to get through this one. The humans are just as dislikeable too. ...more

I found none of the characters likeable - the humans were awful and it's hard to identify with a succession of spiders who keep dying (and I'm fond of spiders!). This is an old book, written about ten years ago I think, and the style is a bit clunky ...more

This is a horrible book. The brutal treatment of the prisoners is awful and the creatures that live on Kiln are disgusting. I spent the first half feeling like someone driving past a terrible accident and unable to look away. It gets better after tha ...more

Almost DNFed this when the first chapter was historical romance - not what I was expecting. Didn't like Milton - he was an a**hole - and Gessica and the chimp weren't much better. My favourite character was Noah. The science was good, naturally, and ...more

Rainer Maria Rilke
“For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror
which we are barely able to endure, and it amazes us so,
because it serenely disdains to destroy us.
Every angel is terrible.”
Rainer Maria Rilke, Duino Elegies

Rainer Maria Rilke
“She who reconciles the ill-matched threads
Of her life, and weaves them gratefully
Into a single cloth –
It’s she who drives the loudmouths from the hall
And clears it for a different celebration.”
Rainer Maria Rilke

W.B. Yeats
“In dreams begin responsibilities.”
William Butler Yeats, Responsibilities

Robert Louis Stevenson
“REQUIEM

Under the wide and starry sky
Dig the grave and let me lie:
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.

This be the verse you grave for me:
Here he lies where he long'd to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

Robert Louis Stevenson, Selected Poems

Robert Louis Stevenson
“I will make you brooches and toys for your delight
Of bird-song at morning and star-shine at night.
I will make a palace fit for you and me
Of green days in forests and blue days at sea.”
