This line completely encapsulates the tragedy of Heartless. From the very beginning, you already know how the story will end and yet I still found myself hoping—desperately—that it wouldn’t. That somehow, Cath’s fate would be kinder.
This was a five-star read for me because of the emotional impact, the beautiful writing, and the depth of the characters. This isn’t just a romance—it’s a tragedy. You watch Catherine slowly become the Queen of Hearts, not because she was always destined to be cruel, but because no one ever stopped to ask her what she wanted until it was far too late.
Cath was such a strong and relatable protagonist. Her desire to make her parents proud and to be the person they expect her to be drives so many of her decisions, and watching that slowly lead to her downfall was heartbreaking. It felt painfully real—that inner turmoil of choosing between your own dreams and the weight of expectations.
And then there’s Jest. He’s easily one of my favorite male characters ever. The way he speaks to Cath, the way he sees her as something precious even when she doesn’t see it herself—it made their relationship feel so genuine and tender. That just made everything hurt more in the end.
The origin story of the Queen of Hearts was brutal and deeply sad. Even knowing who she becomes, I wasn’t prepared for how much it would touch me. The ending completely devastated me—I actually teared up. I knew how it had to end, but I still wanted to believe there was a chance for something different.
Marissa Meyer’s writing is one of the reasons she’s my favorite author. There’s something so thoughtful and immersive about the way she tells a story. It pulls you in and makes you feel everything alongside the characters.
I would reread this book over and over again, even knowing how much it hurts. If you’re looking for a story that will emotionally wreck you in the best way, this is it. ...more "
