I was about to say that I have no idea, but I realised that part of the reason why I'm in Japan right now is because I read Shusaku Endo's Silence, so I shall choose that.

Silence is a story concerning the kakure Christians of Japan, and was one of the stories that year which moved me deeply. Normally, it would just end like that, but I also went on my first trip to Japan later that year, and that made me want to study in Japan. The rest is history.

It was one of the two books I analysed for my EE as well, so yeah, I guess it's made a very big impact. (At least, in terms of a measurable impact)(less)

“She can’t possibly be evil, she’s adorable.”
Eustacia Tan, Beauty's Daughter

“So much for that scented handkerchief.”
Eustacia Tan, The Nutcracker King

“You were very brave, Demoiselle Marie.”
Eustacia Tan, The Nutcracker King

“You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.”
C.S. Lewis

“And it is I, Raksha [The Demon], who answers. The man’s cub is mine, Lungri–mine to me! He shall not be killed. He shall live to run with the Pack and to hunt with the Pack; and in the end, look you, hunter of little naked cubs–frog-eater– fish-killer–he shall hunt thee!”
Rudyard Kipling, The Jungle Book

“The python dropped his head lightly for a moment on Mowgli's shoulders. "A brave heart and a courteous tongue," said he. "They shall carry thee far through the jungle, manling. But now go hence quickly with thy friends. Go and sleep, for the moon sets and what follows it is not well that thou shouldst see.”
Rudyard Kipling, The Jungle Books

“A good book is the best of friends, the same today and forever.”
Martin Farquhar Tupper

“It is you who are unpoetical," replied the poet Syme. "If what you say of clerks is true, they can only be as prosaic as your poetry. The rare, strange thing is to hit the mark; the gross, obvious thing is to miss it. We feel it is epical when man with one wild arrow strikes a distant bird. Is it not also epical when man with one wild engine strikes a distant station? Chaos is dull; because in chaos the train might indeed go anywhere, to Baker Street or to Bagdad. But man is a magician, and his whole magic is in this, that he does say Victoria, and lo! it is Victoria. No, take your books of mere poetry and prose; let me read a time table, with tears of pride. Take your Byron, who commemorates the defeats of man; give me Bradshaw, who commemorates his victories. Give me Bradshaw, I say!”
G.K. Chesterton, The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare
