As Emily pushed her way through the throngs gathered in the Grand Hall, she squinted and saw a man standing there, holding a placard. She came closer and saw that indeed, it had her name on it.

“Hi, I’m Emily,” she said to him as he gazed off in the distance.

“Oh,” he said. “Oh, sorry, wasn’t paying attention. So…”

“Yeah, um. I’m supposed to go to, uh, the main intern facility, I guess?” Emily glanced behind him to see a somewhat large trunk, metallic and lifted slightly off the floor by wheels at each corner. “I’ve only got this duffle. I don’t think we need to put it in that thing,” she said, helpfully. “I can just carry it.”

“Yeah…um, the thing is,” he said, putting the placard down on the ground next to the trunk and extending his hand to her. “First of all, I’m Jeremy and I’ll be your shipper today. I hope that you are doing well, and that you will find the experience not too bad,” he intoned in a rote fashion. “Please feel free to fill out a comment card after your experience.”

“Alright?” Emily let go of his hand and looked over to the exits, expecting him to show her which way they were going to the car.

“So, uh, just let me open this up and we can get you in it, okay?”

Emily has once again committed herself to something she didn't bother reading the fine print for. Off she goes on another RailTrek journey, again to Chicago, but this time to do an internship with the company behind most of her troubles: RestrainTeq.

“Ember Buns!” called out a voice from the other room. Out came a man, thin, tall, dressed entirely in black, with his black hair tied back in a ponytail.

“Um…Sun,” I corrected. He stopped and looked at me like I had just said the strangest thing ever.

“Buns would be better,” he said, and I smiled tightly at him. I did kind of have to agree, though.

“Anyway,” he continued, motioning to me to follow him, and turned around to reenter the room he had emerged from. I followed him in and found myself in a small bedroom, with a woman (yay) holding a camera.

“Hi,” I waved to her. She didn’t bother waving back or say anything.

“So, we’ll want you on the bed here, spread out, welcoming. Got it?” he said.

I nodded. “Welcoming,” I repeated.

“We’re doing a whole concept thing. It’s going to be epic. The world is dying, Ember. You understand that, right?”

I raised an eyebrow at him. “Okay…it’s dying and…sex will save it?”

“No, no! Nothing will save it. We’re all fucked! But since it’s all going down, we might as well have sex, that’s the point. That’s the sorrow we’re trying to capture here.”

“Ah yeah, sorrows of the moon. I get it,” I said, not really getting it.

“So. What’s a pair of pretty girls like you two doing in here?” she asked. “Did you…” she leaned over and winked in a slow, exaggerated manner, “you know…”

“Um…” I stared saying, only to be interrupted by Jessica’s frantic elbowing in my side.

“Des—” she hissed in my ear.

I rolled my eyes and said to the nice lady next to me, “So sorry. One moment…” then turned to face Jessica.

“What?”

“Um, there’s a lot of scary looking guys. Over there…” she twisted around and pointed a finger over to the side of the room, her handcuffed wrists kept close together near her abdomen. “You see them?”

I glanced over to where she was pointing and suppressed a sigh. “Yeah, I guess,” I whispered back. “We’re at the downtown station, Jess. There’s bound to be all sorts of scary-ass people here!”

Here's my Amazon review of Female, Unicorn: Part 1 by Badger Therese. (Review should go live soon.)

Quick summary: Reading this book, I constantly said to myself: "Oh my god! Exactly what I was hoping for!"

The details:
I make it a point to purchase and read every Badger Therese book as it comes out. The author has a particular skill in creating worlds and characters that are engaging and worth the reader’s time with a substantial payout. Every work is different while still maintaining some core characteristics, making each book a thrilling discovery of the new while still fulfilling the reader’s expectations of dystopian eroticism. In particular, the depictions of institutionalized captivity and normalization of abnormal systems that the characters deal with as part of the world they live in never fails to pay out. Experiencing all these different worlds is part of the fun of hopping on the Badger Therese train.

In this, the first in hopefully a long series, we return to the world of Female, Recreational. But this time we are presented with the viewpoint of a girl born into the system and growing up as a slave owned by a family. The writing is amazing, and for any fan of the Female, Recreational series, it hits all of the high notes needed to bring us back into that world. The author’s ability to take the reader deep into the psyche of the characters and make us feel for them, while at the same time allowing us to thrill at the erotic nature of their degradation in this, a very unnatural and dehumanizing system, speaks of the high level of writing skill.

No one else does this as well, and as I writer myself, I wish I could come anywhere as close to depicting a world that I desperately want to experience myself, but also hope never actually comes to pass.

Buy this book, you will love it.
