Windu Thorne was born in 1957 in a small town in British Columbia, Canada. Growing up in the shadow of ancient forests and snow-capped mountains, he developed a lifelong reverence for the natural world. His early fascination with wild plants and their healing power was nurtured by his grandmother, who shared stories and remedies rooted in family tradition.

In his early twenties, Windu set out on a journey that would shape his life’s work. From the misty jungles of Southeast Asia to the mountain villages of the Andes, he studied directly with herbalists, shamans, and indigenous healers. These travels gave him a rare perspective on the universal language of plants and the shared wisdom of natural medicine across cultures.

No, I’d head straight for the Shire, to learn the art of stillness from hobbits who understand that a well-tended garden is as noble as any throne.

I'd spend mornings walking through dew-laced fields with a pipe I don’t know how to use, learning names for clouds and birds I’ve never seen. Afternoons would be for storytelling under trees older than memory, sipping ale that tastes like forgotten laughter.

And at twilight, I’d find my way to Lothlórien, just once, to sit beneath the golden mallorn trees and hear the silence that even elves pause to listen to.

What would I do there? Exactly what I seek to do here—listen deeper, feel slower, and remember that magic lives in the small things we rush past.(less)

Why I Started The Herbal Odyssey

I never planned to write a book.

What I did plan—somewhere between the forest trails of British Columbia and the overgrown ruins of a monastery in southern Italy—was to listen. To the earth. To the whispers of old traditions. To the scent of a herb crushed between thumb and forefinger. This is how The Herbal Odyssey began: not with ambition, but with reverence.

For decades, I collected notebooks fil Read more of this blog post »
