Patrick Tooban writes legend‑rooted historical fiction set in the Iron Age world of Ireland and its neighbouring lands, where history and legend meet in the lives of people shaped by kinship, obligation, and place.

His debut novel, The Oak and the Eagles, opens the Calgach Scéla chronicle – a story of continuity and resilience told through family bonds, communal memory, and the quiet pressures of survival. The prequel short stories, The Oak and the Oath and The Oak and the Order, offer gateways into this world, exploring how promises, land, and belonging endure across generations.

Patrick’s work draws on Irish proverbs, communal traditions, and the landscapes of oak and stone. He values prose that balances legend’s resonance with emotional im

How a Single Historical Question Opens a World.

How Far Can a Roman Senator Travel in a Year of Chaos?

In writing the Calgach Scéla, I always find myself asking deceptively simple questions. A recent example (no spoilers!) involved the family of Trajan.
Could Marcus Ulpius Traianus – father of the future emperor – plausibly have been in Italica (his hometown) in the late summer of AD 69?
I soon learned that this man, at this time, was a senior, serving officer under the command of the soon-to-be emperor Vespasian. How could Ulpius Traianus have been released from that duty to travel home to Hispania?
The sources are silent. The empire was fractured. Legions were declaring emperors faster than Rome could bury them.
To answer the question, I had to reconstruct:
• the political loyalties of Hispania
• the travel routes between East and West
• the role of provincial elites in a civil war
• the gaps in Tacitus’ account
• the rhythms of Roman military command
The result surprised me.
Not only could Traianus have been there – the political logic of the moment almost requires it. Hispania needed stabilising. Vespasian needed trusted envoys. Italica needed a native son to anchor its allegiance.
This is the kind of work that shapes my novels: following a single thread until it reveals the tapestry.

Website

I’ve added a new page to my website for readers interested in the world behind the Calgach Scéla. It brings together some of the research threads that underpin the stories – the northern lands, the genealogies, the sea routes, the rites, and the wider world of AD 69.
If you’d like to explore it, you can find it here: https://patricktooban.com/a-quiet-com...
Thank you for reading.

Patrick Tooban A quick update: The Oak and the Eagles has been longlisted for the 2026 CAP Awards – a well regarded Irish award for independent authors. Short list in August. Thank you to everyone who has read and supported the book so far.

Patrick Tooban I’m here for awareness rather than attention, for curiosity rather than noise.
I don’t use this space to push sales. I use it to share what I’m working through, what I’m learning, and what still feels worth asking about.
