Because I'm interested in the horse-human bond, I have a file of interesting stories about horses and people from the past. I came across Annie's story for the first time about ten years ago-- but I got a little bit of pushback when I first suggested telling her story. She's an older woman-- not too rich, not too healthy, not much money. Nothing special about her except that she wasn't ready to be written off by the world. You hear about older women actors having trouble finding roles, and in truth, it's the same for women in books-- you might read about movie stars, spies, the mistresses of Presidents... but when's the last time you read a book about an ordinary woman who just refuses to be taken for granted? That's why I was so delighted to be able to introduce this indomitable woman to the world.

How Fallen for France Found Me

A boy. A horse. A mother's gift of amber beads. A desperate journey to reunite.

The original inspiration for my new novel came from a pamphlet written by an English veterinarian who served in the Blue Cross in France during the Great War.

The spark was when he mentioned the Blue Cross's philosophy — horses have no nationalities. Among those he'd treated, he mentioned a Moroccan Barb.
