Hi, I’m Larysa Lymar, author, illustrator, former teacher, professional crayon finder, and full-time believer in the emotional wisdom of small humans.

I created Growing Up with Sofia & Mark after watching my granddaughter and her best friend build the kind of friendship adults spend a lifetime trying to recreate. The series began with The Great Monster Spray Rescue, and it turns out that when you mix childhood bravery, empathy, and a little humor, you get stories that children don’t just listen to - they see themselves in.

Ulysses by James Joyce: A Friendly Survival Guide

“Don’t even try to read it! You will fail!” said my university English literature professor when she was presenting Ulysses by James Joyce. We were seventy-five students sitting in a large auditorium, listening to this surprisingly promising piece of advice coming from a strict teacher who, in every other context, tirelessly encouraged us to read as many books from the programme as possible and as Read more of this blog post »

The Great Monster Spray Rescue by Larysa Lymar
"All children worry about monsters in the night, but this book has a clever solution. Literally, because it comes in a bottle and you can spray it. Sofia is one such frightened little girl, but her best friend Mark, who is all of six years old arrives" Read more of this review »

“When I returned to Kyiv, I got involved in community activism, specifically, in the Save Old Kyiv movement. We were protesting the erection of new buildings in Kyiv’s historic areas. There was one case in particular when a large Orthodox church started to be built in the only square in a certain neighborhood of Kyiv, next to the historic Karavaievi Dachi district.”
