I’m an independent author and avid reader of books. I also enjoy writing (unsolicited) reviews and I have a review blog at http://soozbookreviews.blogspot.co.uk/. Like many, for me writing came out of a love of reading. I also wanted a way to be creative and, since I have always been more comfortable expressing myself through the written word, it seemed like the best way forward for me. I started my first novel, Butterfly porcupine, in 2009 and what I discovered was a sheer love of the writing process and the joy that comes from actually completing a novel. Butterfly porcupine was published in 2011 and is the first of a coming-of-age contemporary series called Tales from Aintree Court. A second revised edition was published in July 2012 alo ...more

2016 - A Bad Year in General, A Good Year in Books

I think it is fair to say that many of us feel as though 2016 was an annus horribilis. That said, this was not the case for my year in books.

Books were a soothing balm in a year when we lost so many prominent people, such as the (UK) MP Jo Cox (and others too numerous to mention), who touched the lives of so many and made a positive influence, leaving many of us feeling sad and cheated.

Susan Francis, Butterfly Porcupine

“The plain state of being human is dramatic enough for anyone; you don't need to be a heroin addict or a performance poet to experience extremity. You just have to love someone.”
Nick Hornby, How to Be Good

“The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function.”
F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Crack-Up

“Read, read, read. Read everything -- trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it.
Then write. If it's good, you'll find out. If it's not, throw it out of the window.”

Hi Amy,
Sorry for the late reply. This one was tricky because I am relying completely on my imagination this time (the previous 2 were partially auto-biographical so flowed easier). I pretty much have the main plot now but am yet to complete the first draft. It is progressing nicely but I still have a long way to go. This one will be a sweet romance (closer to the style of bk1 than bk 2). I think you'll like this one ;) Thanks so much for your interest. It's always nice to hear from you. My best, Susan

Hi Amy,

I am so glad you liked the 2nd book! The third book will mainly be about Will and Kris and will also bring Ollie to the forefront. I can get back to working on it now that book 2 is out ;)

Susan The cover of my new novel is apt. Not just because of the musical theme that runs through it, but because the image sums up the situations and the relationships (a bit chaotic and messy, LOL). To quote Kai Hansen, "Sometimes it's just .... complicated."
