Stacy Schiff is the author of Véra (Mrs. Vladimir Nabokov), winner of the Pulitzer Prize; Saint-Exupéry, a Pulitzer Prize finalist; and A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America, winner of the George Washington Book Prize, the Ambassador Award in American Studies, and the Gilbert Chinard Prize of the Institut Français d'Amérique. All three were New York Times Notable Books; the Los Angeles Times Book Review, the Chicago Tribune, and The Economist also named A Great Improvisation a Best Book of the Year. The biographies have been published in a host of foreign editions.

I'm not sure I'm following the rules, because this is a question about Cleopatra. Loved your book! There are still so many mysteries about Cleopatra. Is there a lost dream object out there -- something where you would say "If archeologists could only find X, it would tell us so much about Cleopatra?"

Some of what we know about justice in her day we know from legal documents that survived inside of mummified crocodiles. So more crocodile mummies, please! For years archeologists have searched for her tomb; it would not resolve the mystery of her death, but if found, it would tell us something of her life.(less)

Not really a question? But I just want to say that I have very much enjoyed your books. You a a wonderful conversational style and have the ability to bring an historical figure and time to life. And you do great research to ensure accuracy OK. I had to include a question mark or it wouldn't take it. Silly, huh?

I spend a ridiculous amount of time in the archives reading around my subject, trying to figure out what she saw when she got out of bed in the morning, what preoccupied her during her day, and what she dreamed about at night. It would be nice to think all that prowling about -- most recently, in 17th century America, a shadowy, chilly, dislocated place -- paid off.(less)
