My name is Brendan—though in the world of twisty thrillers and buried secrets, I go by B. P. Kelso.
Under that pen name, I write mysteries and thrillers with humor, heart, and the occasional hammer. My debut novel, The Night She Said Hatchet, was inspired by my experience caregiving for my mother with Alzheimer’s—when one strange word from her triggered a 40-year-old murder mystery. (the mom with Alzheimer's is fact - the 40-year-old murder master, well that parts fiction)
In my other life as Brendan P. Kelso, I write hilarious, melodramatic one-act plays for kids, adapting Shakespeare, Greek myths, and classic lit in ways that make 7th graders snort-laugh while secretly learning. I’ve written 40+ plays and sold over 140,000 copies, performed

Unfortunately, she had a stroke or I'm sure she would have lived another 5-10 just to drive me more bonkers! As for what your husband is experiencing, I totally get the fear. After seeing my mom, and recognizing some things that I've struggled with my entire life, it sits in the back of my mind as well. My biggest piece of advice would be to get ahead of it. I mean this for both his mom and himself. Regarding your husband, stay active. Keep learning. And, probably most importantly, stay social. The human connection is more powerful than we realize.

Regarding his mom. Be sure to have an open conversation about it with her and, by doing so, you can stay ahead of this. Make a plan to see a neurologist just for an annual "brain check-up". Stay active. and do research around this. More and more information is coming to light in recent years and ALZ.org is a great organization that offers a free call center to answer many questions that I am ignorant to. It really helped when my wife had to go through dementia issues with her mom.

I hope this answers your questions.

Stay well.

Best,

Brendan(less)

Dyslexia Doesn’t Go Away. It Just Gets Sneakier.

For most of my adult life, I thought I was past my dyslexia.

Like, cool, handled that. Childhood problem. Moved on.

I had it pretty bad when I was a kid. Reading wasn’t just hard—it was frustrating. I didn’t really start enjoying novels until I was around twenty, when I picked up Patriot Games by Tom Clancy.

And suddenly… it clicked.

Words flowed. Sentences made sense. I could actually stay in the sto
