A clang of metal was only a distant sound as someone wrapped their arms around her. “Breathe!” Bear’s voice commanded.

Azika gulped the thick air as if she was suffocating.

“What now?” Vince’s irritated voice barely registered as panic seized her.

Hands pried her fingers from the ragged stone wall she was gripping. She fought them but it was useless. The next thing she knew she was being carried back to cleaner air. The cool air was a soothing relief from the sulfur stench, but she longed for the fresh air of outside.

She looked up into Bear’s face, his eyes were soft with concern. Forgetting herself, she buried her face into his tunic and cried. Guric’s revenge was more than she could handle. She wasn’t going to make it down here.

She wasn’t sure how long she cried but when the tears finally stopped, embarrassment and unease replaced them. Bear hadn’t said a word and she was scared to look into his eyes, afraid of seeing them distant and cold.

She moved out of his embrace, but he held her fast. Azika dared a peek at Bear and shied away from his intense gaze. Sinking as far away as his arms would allow, she lowered her gaze to the cave floor.

Her small voice filled the air between them. “Sorry. I didn’t mean—I’m sorry. You didn’t have to help me.”

His grip on her loosened and she backed out of his arms. “What was that back there?”

Her hands rubbed her arms as if that would warm her. She didn’t look at him when she spoke. “I don’t like tight spaces.”

He barked with laughter. Azika jumped and her gaze flew to his face.

“You have got to be joking! How have you survived this camp being claustrophobic?”

Tight lipped, she pushed to her feet. “You wouldn’t understand.” She wasn’t about to explain to him how Guric had kept her from the mine as a child and how many times since entering the mine she was whipped by the guards for having an episode. Rene usually helped calm her down before it got too bad, but sometimes even she couldn’t help. People just weren’t meant to be underground.

“Azika, does this happen every time you go on shift?”

“No.” Azika paused, unsure if she wanted to say more, but then Bear’s eyebrow arched and she continued, “I’ve learned to deal with it.”

“Not very well from what just happened,” Bear said matter-of-factly.

Her energy seemed to leech from her and she sat down. “I try, but dirt was falling from the ceiling.” She pointed up to emphasize her point. “A whole crew died from a cave-in.”

Here is a much needed update!

I am in the editing stages with Star Cursed Audible and will have it ready for summer!

My editor has Enslavement: First book in the Land Magic Saga  (YA Fantasy) and will have it done at the end of May. Yay. June will be editing month for me for sure! My cover designer has already started on the cover. Eeep! Design by Katt you are amazing!

My last day working of my wonderful Charter school as their teacher's aide/PE instructor will be June 12. After that I will be a stay at home mom and writer with my new little baby coming the end of August!

I also have ambitions to get an author website up and running to give you all more information on my projects and events happening.

The blast came out of nowhere. Ronnie barely had time to brace herself before the blue energy hit. Her sword flew from her hand, leaving Ronnie defenseless. She turned wide blue eyes up to Ronnie. “How did they find us?”Ronnie clenched her hands into fists as she struggled with the anger steadily building within her. If she didn’t calm down, she would teleport again, but she couldn’t let this go unanswered. Rick needed to pay. They needed to hurt him worse than he almost hurt her.

The house smelled like I’d just walked into a Tuscan Villa. Roasted tomatoes and pasta with… I inhaled again, sautéed portabella mushrooms, yum. My stomach rumbled. James bent over to get two plates heaped with yumminess out of the oven. The sight of him in his cream colored apron and those tight Wrangler jeans made it a toss-up as to what I was hungrier for, him or the pasta. He set the plates on the stove top, and I closed the distance between us. I threw my arms around his neck and kissed his throat. “I am so in love with you right now.” His arms squeezed me closer. “Hmm, are you sure it isn’t the food talking?” I laughed. “It might’ve added more to your charm tonight than usual.”“That hungry, huh?” The silver streaks in his eyes conveyed his double meaning, leaving me at a loss for words as my stomach fluttered, and I blushed. “Eww you guys. Get a room,” Erika said, pushing us playfully out of her way. “So does the teacher get any dinner? I worked hard, too, so stop ogling each other, and feed me.” She grinned. We chuckled, and he handed her a plate. She sat at the table and dug in. My stomach twisted in hunger as I watched her. That blending-in-with-nature exercise was energy zapping work. I hadn’t been this hungry in a while. James stroked my cheek. “You better eat, too. Sounds like progress was made, and it carved a hole in both of your stomachs.” The hopefulness in his voice made me glad I hadn’t failed today’s lesson.“I did have a little success.” I teased him with my vagueness. Smiling sweetly at him, I grabbed my plate and joined Erika, who was smirking behind her glass of water. “Out with it you two.” James sat next to us. “From the way you both are grinning, and the fact that you are hours late tells me something big happened.” “Go ahead,” I said to Erika, who was bursting to share the news.“Tayla, blended with a fir tree! She did such a great job, I had to coach her back to her human rhythm.” Erika plopped a forkful of pasta between her lips, her eyes glowing with pride.James’ mouth fell open. “No?”Erika’s smile grew, and she swallowed. “I am so glad you found her and brought her into the pack, James. I will finally have someone to teach all my secrets to.”My lips stretched into a full blown smile. “James, did you hear that! We can train together. This is going to be fun!”Erika threw James a sarcastic smile, and they both looked at me with amusement. “What? I am just excited.” Finally, I was good at something werewolf. “We aren’t laughing at you, Tayla. I was just teasing James. You see he has talent, but nothing like the raw skill you possess to master it like I have,” Erika said. “I have never fully melded my rhythm with anything. I am excellent at mimicking, but could never understand the depth Erika always spoke of. It is truly an amazing gift you have, Tayla.” He touched my knee and looked at me with such admiration that I blushed. “Really, it was Erika. I couldn’t have done it without her guiding me. I’m not really even sure I can do it again.”“Oh, she’ll do it again.” Erika winked at me. “She’s experienced the high and is now addicted. I don’t know, James, you might lose her to the forest.” “Then I’ll just have to entertain her better.” He gave me a wicked grin.“You’re in a mood,” I whispered, needing to fan my flushed cheeks and settle my fiery nerves.

About Ashley Lavering :
In addition to being a mother and wife, I teach at a charter school and enjoy scuba diving. I love to be adventurous and try new and exciting things. Some of the things I have done are sky diving, glacier hiking, cave spelunking, and kayaking on the ocean. I want to experience the world, but will never be able to see it all, so I write. It is like the world is at my figure tips when I open a word document and delve into another story.  Oh, the places you'll go as Dr. Seuss says.
