Thanks for visiting my profile! I'm an author of crime fiction, including the Scott Drayco mystery series, which has been honored by the American Independent Writers, Maryland Writers Association, named Best Mystery in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards, and been a finalist for the Shamus Awards, the Silver Falchion, the Daphne Awards, the Foreword Book Review Awards, and the Kindle Book Awards. Library Journal said of the series, "worth putting on your reading list," and I hope you'll think so, too. ...more

I didn't think about that phrase again for years until I reached adulthood and researched it out of curiosity. But what I found was puzzling as there's quite a bit of mystery surrounding the term, with many different interpretations regarding its ethnic origins: does “Black-Dutch” refer to a Native American genealogical link? The mysterious Melungeons of the Southern U.S.? Or Dutch people of Spanish or Portuguese extraction, or possibly Sephardic Jewish colonists?

Of course, the mystery author in me began conjuring all sorts of subplots and branching intrigue regarding these people and their origins. Was the meaning behind "Black-Dutch" purely ethnic or was there a more sinister, criminal underpinning? Were my ancestors a bunch of rogues or gypsies? Did they leave the Netherlands for new opportunities or were they running from the law? This line of thinking naturally led to various storylines for either historical or contemporary crime fiction settings, although I haven't decided in which direction the trail should lead. One thing’s for sure: I appear to come from a long line of rather mysterious people, which makes my choice of occupation seem somehow predestined. #MysteryWeek(less)

B.V. Zoë wrote: "Hi BV. Thanks so much for Friending me here. How's the writing going with you?" Hey, Zoë! Writing is going a bit better. My father's health started declining in the fall leading to a stint in home hospice and his death in February. It took awhile for me to ease back into things, but writing is good therapy.

I enjoy your Murderati posts and the Charlie Fox series, and maybe someday soon you can take some "Author R&R" on my In Reference to Murder blog. Authors offer their take on the research and references they use in their writing. (see http://tinyurl.com/b2vyavy). If you ever have time in your busy schedule, would love to have you drop by! Just let me know your availability at bv@bvlawson.com.
