News Post from the Supernatural Chicago Paper
Originally published in Supernatural Chicago Weekly
Chicago’s winter wind cuts through the air like a blade, carrying both the bite of Lake Michigan and something else—magic, raw and powerful, threading through the atmosphere like invisible current. Standing at the gates of the Zhang-Shadow compound, my breath mists in the sub-zero air while my enhanced smartphone chirps softly, its crystal-augmented sensors detecting power signatures that would have been impossible to measure fifteen years ago. The Great Awakening changed everything, including how we perceive and interact with the world around us.
Today, I’m here to interview Chicago’s most talked-about power couple: Meiren Zhang and Kai Shadow, the duo who helped reshape reality itself.
The CompoundThe sprawling estate sits on two hundred acres outside Chicago’s city limits, its architecture a stunning blend of traditional Chinese pagodas and cutting-edge sustainable design. Solar panels enhanced with spirit-conducting crystals gleam beneath the winter sun alongside carefully carved energy channels that pulse with both electrical current and mystical force. Despite the frigid temperatures, gardens flourish with both ordinary winter plants and specimens that definitely aren’t found in any normal botanical guide—their growth sustained by heating systems that run on a hybrid of geothermal energy and contained fire spirits.
“We wanted a place where all the children could grow into their abilities safely,” Meiren explains as she leads me through courtyards where teenagers practice forms that merge martial arts with elemental manipulation. Steam rises from the heated pathways beneath our feet—a ingenious system that combines traditional radiant heating with controlled flame magic. Her movements carry an unconscious grace, and flames dance briefly around her fingertips when she gestures, providing welcome warmth against the bitter cold. She seems unaware of how naturally the fire responds to her emotions.
At twenty-one in appearance (though centuries older in reality), Meiren Zhang has become the reluctant poster child for supernatural integration. Her story—from Dark One to Harbinger to the woman who helped broker peace between chaos and order—reads like mythology. But sitting across from her in the compound’s main hall, watching her fret over whether one of the younger children is getting enough vitamin D during the long Chicago winter, she seems remarkably… normal.
“The hardest part isn’t the powers,” she admits, accepting a cup of tea from a service robot whose crystal core glows softly with contained spirit energy. The tea steams with more than heat—tiny wisps of flame dance across its surface. “It’s figuring out how to be a parent to seven kids with completely different needs and abilities during a Chicago winter that seems determined to last forever this year.”
The Shadow Behind the FlameKai Shadow emerges from literal darkness, stepping through a patch of shadow that definitely shouldn’t exist under the bright LED-crystal hybrid lighting system. Where Meiren’s power runs hot and bright, his presence brings a cool, steady calm that somehow makes the room feel more balanced rather than colder—essential during Chicago’s brutal winter months.
“She worries too much,” he says, settling beside Meiren with the easy familiarity of someone who’s spent lifetimes learning her moods. His shadows automatically adjust the room’s lighting levels, working in harmony with the smart home system that monitors everything from temperature to ambient magical energy. “The children are stronger than she thinks.”
Their love story spans millennia and reads like the plot of an epic fantasy novel—star-crossed lovers separated by cosmic forces, finding each other again and again across different incarnations. But watching them together, what strikes me isn’t the grand romantic gesture. It’s the way Kai unconsciously shifts to shield Meiren from a sudden gust of wind when automated windows open for air circulation, how her flames automatically warm the air around him when the building’s AI detects a temperature drop.
“We’ve learned that love isn’t about the dramatic moments,” Kai explains when I ask about their relationship. His smartphone—a latest-generation model with integrated ward stones—chimes softly with what sounds like a message from one of the children. “It’s about choosing each other every day, even when—especially when—the world tries to tear you apart.”
The Next GenerationTheir children range from Zhensefu, now twenty and studying both quantum computing and ancient ward theory at Northwestern University’s new Integrated Studies program, to little Liang, who at fifteen has already mastered water manipulation techniques that most adult practitioners struggle with. Each child represents a different combination of their parents’ abilities, creating power sets that shouldn’t exist according to traditional magical theory.
The compound’s tech infrastructure reflects this integration—holographic displays show both weather patterns and magical energy fluctuations, while the children’s training equipment ranges from VR simulation pods to ancient meditation crystals. Security systems blend motion sensors with spirit wards, creating layered protection that works on both technological and mystical levels.
“Rose is the one to watch,” Meiren says, and there’s something in her voice—pride mixed with concern. Through the smart-glass windows, I can see her manipulating both fire and her tablet simultaneously, flames dancing around the device’s crystal-enhanced screen as she works on what appears to be complex calculations. “She’s always been special, even among our family. But lately…”
She trails off as a black crow lands on the windowsill, its intelligent eyes fixed on our conversation. The bird’s presence makes the smart-glass shimmer slightly, reality bending around it in ways that cause the window’s integrated displays to flicker between normal transparency and showing energy readings that shouldn’t be possible.
“She’s been having the dreams again,” Kai finishes quietly. “Visions of what’s coming. The AI systems can’t predict them—they’re beyond algorithmic analysis.”
Trouble on the HorizonDespite the peaceful winter afternoon and the sound of children’s laughter from the heated indoor training facilities, there’s an undercurrent of tension in the compound. Several staff members move with the alertness of people expecting trouble, and I notice ward stones have been recently reinforced along the property boundaries—their crystal matrices now interfacing directly with the compound’s digital security network.
“The Silver Queen may have retreated, but she didn’t disappear,” Meiren admits when pressed. “We’ve detected increased Hollow activity in the past few months. Someone’s organizing them again. Our monitoring systems—both digital and mystical—are picking up coordinated movement patterns.”
Kai’s shadows deepen around him, causing the room’s ambient lighting to automatically adjust. “Rose has been investigating independently. She’s developed her own apps to track supernatural activity, cross-referencing social media data with energy signatures. She thinks she’s ready to handle whatever’s coming.”
“And you don’t agree?”
The look that passes between them speaks volumes. They’ve seen what cosmic forces can do to a family, how quickly peace can shatter into chaos.
“Rose is powerful,” Meiren says carefully. “More powerful than she realizes. She’s already hacking into systems that shouldn’t exist, accessing data streams that blend digital intelligence with mystical knowledge. But power without wisdom is dangerous. She’s young, and she wants to prove herself.”
“Sounds familiar,” Kai observes dryly, earning him a sharp look from his wife.
Looking ForwardAs our interview winds down, I ask about their plans for the future. The compound serves not just as their family home but as an unofficial training ground for young supernaturals struggling to adapt to the post-Awakening world. They’ve quietly helped dozens of families navigate the integration of magic and modern life—teaching children how to use smartphones that respond to both touch and intent, helping parents understand educational apps that incorporate spellcasting tutorials alongside traditional subjects.
“Balance,” Meiren says simply. “That’s always been the goal. Help people understand that magic and technology don’t have to be enemies. That chaos and order can coexist.” She gestures to a wall display showing the compound’s energy usage—a beautiful visualization where digital data streams flow alongside representations of magical currents. “The future isn’t about choosing between the mystical and the technological. It’s about integration.”
“And when that balance is threatened?” I press.
Kai’s smile carries shadows, causing the room’s smart lighting to flicker ominously. “Then we remind the world why it was a mistake to test our family the first time.”
As I prepare to leave, Rose Zhang appears in the doorway. At twenty-two, she carries herself with the confidence of someone who’s grown up knowing exactly what she’s capable of. Her pink hair catches both the LED lighting and the magical energy flowing through the room’s crystal networks, and her crow familiar watches me with eyes that seem far too knowing. A tablet hovers near her shoulder, its screen displaying what looks like real-time energy signatures from across the city.
“You’re writing about us?” she asks, and there’s something in her voice that makes me suddenly understand why her parents worry.
“Just a lifestyle piece,” I reply.
Rose’s smile doesn’t reach her eyes. “How nice. Just remember—we’re not museum pieces. We’re not symbols. We’re a family that happens to be powerful enough to change the world when we need to.” Her tablet chirps with incoming data, and the displays throughout the room flicker in response to whatever she’s monitoring.
The crow on her shoulder spreads its wings, and for just a moment, the shadows in the room deepen to absolute black while every electronic device briefly flatlines. When my vision clears, Rose is gone, leaving only the faint scent of ozone and the feeling that I’ve just been politely but firmly warned.
The VerdictFifteen years after the Great Awakening, the Zhang-Shadow family represents both the promise and the peril of our new world. They’ve found their balance, created their sanctuary, and built something beautiful from the ashes of cosmic conflict—a place where ancient magic flows through fiber optic cables and love transcends both digital and mystical boundaries.
But as I drive away from the compound, my car’s GPS struggling to maintain signal in the lingering magical interference, I can’t shake the feeling that their peaceful winter afternoon was just the calm before another storm. Rose’s warning echoes in my mind, along with the memory of those too-intelligent eyes and the way reality itself seemed to bend around her technology.
Something is stirring in Chicago’s supernatural community. And when it makes its move, the world will once again discover why this family reshaped reality itself.
The Zhang-Shadow compound offers guided tours for accredited supernatural research organizations. Applications must be submitted six months in advance and include full background checks. Note: Electronic devices may experience interference during visits. No photography permitted beyond the main gates.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This interview was conducted three weeks before the events that would later be known as the Raven’s Call Incident. Rose Zhang declined multiple requests for follow-up interviews. Her current whereabouts remain unknown. All attempts to track her through both digital and mystical means have failed.

The Dark One: Crafting a Villain’s Heart of Darkness
Available Now A deep dive into Meiren’s villain arc from EMBER and what makes a truly compelling antagonist
When Heroes Fall: The Birth of the Dark OneIn urban fantasy, the most haunting villains aren’t born evil—they’re made. In my upcoming novel EMBER, protagonist Meiren Zhang carries the scars of her darkest chapter: two centuries as “the Dark One,” a period when she became the very monster she now hunts.
The Catalyst: Love as the Root of Evil
Meiren’s transformation didn’t begin with ambition or power-hunger. It started with love—specifically, the brutal murder of everyone she cherished at the Battle of Emanyon. Watching her husband Sien, her infant son Gen, and her extended family cut down by enemies who wanted to claim their power created a wound so deep it literally carved out her heart.
“The void where her heart should be pulsed with phantom pain as memories threatened to surface – two hundred years of darkness from 1524 to 1724, when she’d been the thing other monsters feared.”
This wasn’t just emotional trauma—it was a literal transformation. Her heart was ripped away, leaving an actual void in her chest that could only be temporarily filled by consuming the blood and souls of others.
The Anatomy of a Strategic VillainWhat made the Dark One terrifying wasn’t mindless destruction—it was purposeful devastation. For 200 years, Meiren carved a path of vengeance across continents, but every strike was calculated:
Historical Impact: She influenced major historical disasters, from London’s Great Fire of 1666 to the fall of ConstantinopleMilitary Precision: She commanded armies of Hollows with tactical brilliancePersonal Stakes: Every target connected to those who had wronged her familyEscalating Power: Each victory fed the void, making her stronger and more dangerous“She’d stalked the shadows of Constantinople in 1204, when the very fabric of reality had nearly torn apart. Each event had shaped her, changed her, pushed her further from the warrior she’d been and closer to something else entirely.”
What Made Her Compelling (Not Just Destructive)1. Retained IntelligenceUnlike mindless monsters, the Dark One kept her strategic mind. She didn’t just destroy—she orchestrated destruction with the precision of a master tactician.
2. Emotional CoreEven in her darkest moments, she was driven by love—twisted, corrupted love for her lost family. Her evil had a reason, making her sympathetic even while being terrifying.
3. Personal CostEvery act of darkness cost her more humanity. She wasn’t enjoying her power—she was drowning in it, using violence to fill an emptiness that could never truly be satisfied.
4. Historical WeightBy tying her actions to real historical events, the Dark One became more than just a supernatural threat—she became a force that had shaped human history.
The Void: Physical Manifestation of Internal DamageOne of the most powerful aspects of Meiren’s villain arc is how her emotional trauma manifested physically:
“The void in her chest pulsed with each word, a reminder of prices paid and bargains struck. She’d died on that battlefield centuries ago, reborn in blood and darkness.”
This literal emptiness serves multiple narrative purposes:
Visual representation of her lossMotivation for her blood-drinking (trying to fill what can’t be filled)Constant reminder of what she’s lostSymbol of how trauma can literally hollow us outRedemption Without ErasureWhen Eve offers Meiren a bargain to become a Hollow Slayer, the story doesn’t simply erase her dark past. Instead, it explores how someone can choose light while still carrying darkness:
She retains the void in her chestHer hunger for blood remains (though controlled)She remembers every life she tookShe struggles daily with her dual natureThe power that made her a terrifying villain is the same power that makes her an effective heroVillain Writing Lessons from the Dark One1. Give Them a ReasonThe best villains believe they’re justified. Meiren’s quest for vengeance made perfect sense from her perspective.
2. Make the Cost PersonalEvery act of villainy should cost the character something—humanity, relationships, pieces of their soul.
3. Layer in CompetenceScary villains are smart villains. The Dark One wasn’t just powerful—she was brilliant.
4. Connect to HistoryGrounding supernatural evil in real historical events gives weight and believability to your world.
5. Plan the Redemption ArcEven when writing a villain, consider what it would take for them to change—and what they’d never be able to leave behind.
The Legacy of DarknessWhat makes Meiren’s story particularly compelling is how her time as the Dark One continues to haunt her redemption arc. She didn’t just stop being evil—she has to actively choose good every day, while carrying the weight of centuries of darkness.
“Each century had taught her new ways to hunt, to adapt. She’d walked through London’s streets during the Great Fire of 1666, tracking Hollows that fed on chaos. She’d stalked the shadows of Constantinople in 1204, when the very fabric of reality had nearly torn apart.”
The Dark One represents the ultimate villain challenge: How do you redeem someone who has literally shaped history through violence? How do you love someone with a hole where their heart should be?
In EMBER, Meiren proves that even the darkest villains can find light—not by forgetting who they were, but by choosing who they want to become.
What makes a villain compelling to you? Do you prefer antagonists driven by love, power, or ideology? #UrbanFantasy #VillainArcs #CharacterDevelopment #WritingTips #EMBER

What if you discovered you were the monster in someone else’s story?Meiren thought she knew who she was: a Hollow Slayer, fighting supernatural creatures in the shadows of Chicago. But when fragments of her past life surface—memories of being the Dark One, a creature of such devastating power that she brought about the Dark Ages—everything she believes about herself shatters.
Now she’s caught between:
Sien, her reincarnated husband who chose another woman despite remembering their ancient loveKai, the mysterious trainer whose violet eyes hold secrets that make her blood singThe truth about the children she doesn’t remember conceiving, born of fire and shadowBecause some loves are worth burning the world to protect.
This isn’t your typical love triangle…This is about a woman discovering that the void where her heart should be isn’t empty—it’s waiting to be filled with something powerful enough to reshape reality itself. It’s about family bonds forged in blood and magic, about sisters who’ve forgotten how to trust each other, and about children who carry the future in their supernatural abilities.
Set against the gritty backdrop of Chicago, where ancient Chinese dynasties meet African tribal magic, where skyscrapers house both corporate offices and mystical academies, Ember blends urban fantasy with deep emotional stakes that will leave you breathless.
A story that’s lived in my heart for years…This tale has been sitting in my heart for so long, growing and evolving, waiting for the right moment to come to life. I believe in this story. I believe in these characters. And I believe that if you’re someone who craves books with heart, soul, and just the right amount of heat, you’re going to fall as hard for this world as I did while creating it.

What are you waiting for?
⚡ FLASH SALE ENDS SOON – DON’T MISS OUT! ⚡
Limited Time Offer: 50% Off! Flash Sale on Book Ember - Hollow Slayer Series Get Your Copy Now Why Book Ember is a Must-Read A Love story that defies time iteselfThis isn’t your typical paranormal romance where the couple meets and falls in love. Meiren and her relationships span millennia—she’s loved, lost, died, been reborn, and loved again across lifetimes.
Compelling CharactersMeeForget the brooding bad boy love interest—Meiren is the one with the dark past. She was the Dark One, responsible for bringing about the actual Dark Ages. The story doesn’t shy away from this or try to excuse it.
A Magic system that actually makes cultural senseToo many urban fantasy novels treat magic like a generic superpower. Ember weaves together authentic Chinese Han Dynasty mysticism with African tribal magic traditions, creating a system where different cultural approaches to power actually complement and enhance each other.
What Readers Are Saying Chaos, Queens, and Cosmic Fire: Ember’s Origin TaleEmber ignites with mythic flair and poetic fire! The Silver Queen births order from chaos with chilling precision, only to be challenged by the mischievous and curvaceous Lilith—who believes a little chaos keeps things interesting. The worldbuilding is rich, like sipping starlight steeped in ancient lore. Expect cosmic queens, whispered blood in the rain, and creation myths that read like lyrical spells. It’s fantasy with a philosopher’s heart and a rebel’s grin.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙚𝙣 in the conference room settled back in their seats. Gabe led her over to a chair while Oliver put his head in his hands and plopped down in the seat to his right. She couldn’t tell if he was exhausted or not, he looked perfect. But Vampiri always did. A man at the end of the table stood and approached her. His long strides ate up the distance until he stood inches in front of her. He was taller than even Gabe, a giant. Long, mahogany dreads fell to the middle of his back. He wasn’t dressed like the others. He wore a Valentino suit without the jacket, and a white linen button-up shirt rolled at the sleeves over strong, masculine arms roped with thickly veined muscles. He had a silver torque around his neck. It gleamed brightly against his bronze skin. His face was aristocratic – hard edges and a straight nose, but it was his eyes that were the most alarming. A shade of violet-like she’d never seen, dark amethyst, fathomless and arrogant. Immortals always had that extra flare humans didn’t, and it appeared this immortal had received an extra helping.
His grin was telling. One that said he knew he was every woman’s fantasy come to life. If she hadn’t sworn men off, he surely would be the object of her desire. Hot, dirty sex appeal was pouring off this man in waves. If she weren’t careful, she’d be caught in the undertow.
“I’m Captain Dravaggio.” His warm, strong hand gripped hers. “Thank you for agreeing to meet with me and my team.”
He quickly introduced her to the men in the room. There was a set of twins that sat across from her. One was smiling as he lit a red cigarette, blowing the smoke in her direction, the other glared. She didn’t take in their looks because she was still stupidly eye f✮✮king the captain. What was it about him? He made her want to jump out of her seat and onto him. There were some other names tossed about; some guy she thought she heard called Adam, and another guy the captain referred to as Hawke. Then there was Gabe and Oliver, whom she’d already met. Dravaggio was saying something about missing team members and apologizing for their absence when Jes realized the guy with the red smoke was sitting next to her now. How the hell did he get so close without her noticing?
“And because you are so enamored with our captain and didn’t hear the introduction,” he held out his hand and grabbed hers, breaking her out of the trance before continuing, “I’m Royce. Resident badass, all around swell motherf✮✮ker, and every woman’s dream come true. Very nice to meet you.”
He held eye contact with her and gently kissed the back of her hand until she was fully aware that all the men in the room were smiling. Captain Sex God bowed and retreated to the chair at the end of the table then gestured with his hands.
What Readers Are Saying This book was great and had a great ending of suspense. Can’t wait to read the next one — SO HURRY UP AND WRITE IT!!!! Love is never a smooth issue when it comes to shifters and humans. I enjoyed the different aspects of the many characters and the “realistic” doubt the heorine has toward her mate. The cliff hanger made my want to pundh somebody, but it really sets up for a dramatic search and rescue for the next book!!! Thanks for an enjoyable read and good luck with your next book!! Check out my book — Bury the Past – Lorie Van Gorp
This is a brilliant new series and if I could give it more than 5 stars I would. Its a change up from the other paranormal books out there, girl meets boy, boy leaves to go back to saving humanity, girl is pg from a one night stand. This book as a great plot, kept me interested until the very end… I wanted more….
If you like the bad boys, werewolves, and more you will love this series….
–Michaela Atkins
“I love the men of the shadow unit! Each has a skill of paranormal ability used to protect the world. This is the story of Agent Stone and the human who is his ultimate fantasy Jesminda. He gave into lust and a one night stand never planning to see her again. But his job places him in the position of protecting Jes. This book is filled with humor (seriously love Royce and his mind reading and wits), action, mystery and a cliffhanger be prepared.

Breaking Free Chapter One Sneak Peak
Breaking Free
Episode 1: The Beginning of the End
The message arrived three hours before Bree Morgan’s birthday party; a digital arrow piercing the carefully constructed facade of her perfect life.
“Mrs. Morgan, you should know… your husband and Ms. Chen are more than just colleagues. I’ve attached proof. I’m so sorry.”
Bree’s fingers hovered over her phone screen. She sat in her private study, where afternoon sunlight poured over the curated collection of African and Spanish art adorning the walls. Each piece told a story of her heritage—her mother’s fierce activism captured in contemporary African American works, her father’s legacy reflected in classical Spanish paintings. But now, all she could see were the photos lighting up her screen with brutal clarity.
Arthur and Veronica entering the Four Seasons. Intimate dinners in darkened restaurants. Stolen touches in corporate parking lots. Her husband’s betrayal documented in high-resolution detail, each image confirming suspicions she’d buried beneath fifteen years of marriage.
Her hand trembled. Then, she lifted the phone and made the call.
“Michael? Yes, I know it’s Saturday afternoon. I need those papers we discussed…” She paused, letting the weight of the moment settle. “Yes, those papers. Before tonight’s party.”
Swiveling in her leather chair, Bree faced the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the garden. Below, staff members arranged flowers and lighting for what should have been a celebration of her forty-two years. Instead, it would become something else entirely. Her reflection showed a woman at a crossroads. Daughter of Katherine Williams, a civil rights powerhouse, and Antonio Ramirez, whose paintings hung in galleries across Europe. Somewhere along the way, she’d become just Arthur Morgan’s wife.
“You’re worried about timing?” She switched effortlessly to Spanish, a habit from countless business calls with Madrid. “No te preocupes, Michael. The timing is perfect.” Her free hand traced the edge of a manila envelope on her desk—documentation she’d been quietly gathering for months. Bank statements. Property deeds. Offshore account numbers. Arthur wasn’t the only one who could play the long game.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. “Come in, Maria.”
Her housekeeper entered, carrying a garment bag containing her midnight blue dress for the evening. “Señora Morgan, the hair stylist is ready, and the first guests will arrive in two hours.”
Bree nodded, then returned to her call. “Have everything ready by seven, Michael. And make sure the papers include the Madrid property…” She smiled, a sharp edge creeping into her voice. “Yes, I know it’s part of his family’s holdings. That’s exactly why I want it included.”
After ending the call, she stood, studying her reflection more carefully. Her warm brown complexion had a healthy glow, despite the stress of recent months. Her mother’s strength showed in the set of her jaw, her father’s artistic soul in the gentle curve of her smile. Tonight, she would need both.
“Maria,” she turned to her housekeeper with genuine warmth, “¿está todo listo para esta noche?”
“Sí, Señora. Everything is ready.”
“Good.” Bree moved to the dress, running her fingers along the silk. “Because tonight is going to be unforgettable.”
She picked up her phone one last time, sending a quick text to her sister Sarah: “It’s happening. Be ready.”
The reply came instantly: “Always got your back, sis. Time to break free.”
Three hours later, Bree stood at the entrance to her grand ballroom, greeting Metro City’s elite. The midnight-blue silk complemented her complexion, and her curls were swept into an elegant updo that revealed her abuela’s pearls. She moved with ease, fluent in every world she occupied—from soul food Sundays and flamenco nights to boardrooms and artist retreats.
“Bree, darling!” Sarah appeared with two fresh glasses of champagne. “You’ve outdone yourself with this party.” She pressed one into Bree’s hand, leaning close to whisper, “Though I notice a certain CEO husband of yours is fashionably late. Again.”
Bree’s fingers tightened imperceptibly around the crystal stem. “Arthur mentioned a last-minute meeting.”
The lie tasted bitter on her tongue. Her phone hadn’t buzzed with his usual excuses, no messages explaining his tardiness. This time, the silence spoke volumes.
When the grand doors swung open, a wave of laughter swept in—and Bree instantly recognized the voice.
Arthur entered, tall and polished in Tom Ford. His strong Castilian features might’ve once stirred pride. Now, they chilled her. But it was the woman on his arm who drew every eye.
Veronica Chen, thirty-two. All legs and ambition in a red dress that screamed defiance.
Sarah’s sharp intake of breath matched the collective murmur that rippled through the crowd. “The nerve of him,” she hissed, but Bree raised a hand, silencing her sister’s brewing storm.
“No aquí,” Bree murmured in Spanish, her social mask sliding firmly into place before switching back to English. “Not now.” The familiar rhythm of switching between languages grounded her, a reminder of the strength in her dual heritage.
Arthur guided Veronica through the crowd like a prized thoroughbred, nodding to board members and accepting birthday wishes with casual authority. They approached Bree with practiced nonchalance, as if this scene hadn’t been choreographed for maximum impact.
“Bree, happy birthday.” Arthur’s kiss landed cold on her cheek. “You remember Veronica from the firm? She’s been instrumental in the Singapore merger.”
Veronica extended a manicured hand, her smile razor-sharp. “Bree, thank you for having me. Arthur speaks so highly of your… organizational skills.”
The crystal stem in Bree’s hand could have snapped from the pressure of her grip, but her voice remained steady. “Veronica, how lovely to see you again. Though I wasn’t aware the Singapore deal required such… late-night dedication.”
From across the room, James Chen—her former mentor from her gallery days—caught her eye. He raised an eyebrow in silent question, ready to intervene. Bree gave him the slightest shake of her head. This was her moment to navigate.
Arthur’s laugh carried a warning edge. “Actually, I have an announcement to make.” He raised his voice, tapping his glass with a silver ring that matched Bree’s wedding band. “Everyone, may I have your attention?”
Time slowed. Bree saw everything with crystalline clarity: Veronica’s predatory smirk. Arthur’s showmanship. The guests’pitying glances.
But rising through the haze wasn’t shame.
It was something else.
Something dangerous.
Something free.
“First, to my wonderful wife,” Arthur began, his corporate smile never reaching his eyes, “happy birthday. And second, I’d like to recognize someone special. Veronica here has just accepted a position as our new Chief Operating Officer.”
The room erupted in polite applause, but Bree heard the underlying whispers. She knew what they saw: the aging wife, the young protégé, the oldest story in the book. But they didn’t see what was happening behind her eyes—years of compromise crystallizing into clarity, sacrifice hardening into resolve.
Bree raised her glass, her gaze locked with Arthur’s. “To truth,” she said, “and the courage to face it.” She took a deliberate sip, then set the glass down with a quiet finality that echoed louder than any shattered crystal could.
The string quartet resumed playing, but the note of discord lingered. As guests returned to their conversations, Bree felt something shift inside her—like a key turning in a lock she didn’t know existed. She caught her reflection in one of the ballroom’s gilt-edged mirrors. What she saw this time was a woman on the cusp of transformation, shedding her gilded chains one link at a time.
Sarah squeezed her arm, concern etched on her face, but Bree gave her a smile that was more real than any she’d worn all evening. “It’s alright,” she said softly, and for the first time in years, she meant it. “I think it’s time for a change.”
In the distance, thunder rolled across the summer sky, promising a storm that would either destroy or cleanse. Bree straightened her shoulders, ready at last for either outcome. The party swirled around her, but she stood in its eye, no longer the porcelain doll in a perfect dollhouse, but a woman awakening to her own power.
The night was young, and so, she realized, was she.

Ember Deleted Scene: Day 2
Welcome back to Café Ember! After the wonderful response to our first deleted scene, I’m excited to share another glimpse behind the curtain. Today, we’re exploring a powerful moment between Kai and Meiren that didn’t make it into the final manuscript of “Ember,” the first book in the Hollow Slayers Series.
Author
Exclusive Deleted Scene TE: One of the most fascinating characters to write in “Ember” (Hollow Slayers Series Book 1) was undoubtedly Kai. His journey from manipulator to protector, from shadow to substance, evolved throughout the drafting process and will continue to develop throughout the series.
I’ve always been drawn to characters who exist in moral gray areas—those who’ve done terrible things for what they believed were the right reasons. Kai embodies this complexity. He’s ancient, powerful, and has made choices that have shaped the course of history itself. As the Hollow Slayers Series progresses, we’ll see more facets of his character unfold.
The scene I’m sharing today reveals a vulnerable moment between Kai and Meiren as they prepare for a crucial phase in their plan. It’s a rare glimpse of doubt from a character who typically moves with unwavering purpose:
Kai’s shadows boiled with uncharacteristic turmoil as they prepared for the next phase. The children’s sleeping forms—their children—cast small, vulnerable shapes across the safe house floor.
“Having second thoughts?” Meiren asked, watching his agitation.
“Not about them.” His violet eyes held ancient pain. “About the methods.”
“Bit late for that, isn’t it?”
“Two thousand years too late.” His laugh held no humor. “I helped engineer your fall, guided you to Boromir, manipulated Eve into offering her bargain. I orchestrated your salvation to serve our purposes.” His shadows rippled. “Does that bother you? It should.”
“Why did you do it?”
“At first? Orders. The Silver Queen wanted controlled chaos—power without free will. But then I…” His voice faltered. “I saw you changing. Becoming something beyond their calculations. And my loyalty shifted.”
“To what?”
“To whom.” His gaze held hers with uncomfortable intensity. “The more I watched you fight against your nature, the more I questioned my own role. Was I any better than the Queen, manipulating lives to serve my purpose?”
His shadows formed images of her through centuries—fighting, falling, rising again. The tenderness in these shadow-memories made her chest ache with something beyond physical pain.
“I started breaking protocols. Making decisions that protected you rather than the mission. Creating moments where your true nature could emerge.” His voice dropped. “I went from loyal soldier to traitor because I couldn’t bear watching what they were doing to you.”
Meiren studied him, seeing the weight of millennia in his eyes. “You’re still manipulating events.”
“Yes.” No defense, no justification. “But the purpose changed. From control to liberation. From serving the Queen to serving life itself.”
His honesty carried more weight than any explanation. Meiren found herself reaching for his hand, her flames meeting his shadows without burning.
“Redemption’s a complicated path,” she said softly.
“I haven’t even started walking it,” he replied.
TE: [leans forward] I remember writing this scene late one night, trying to capture that moment when someone finally confronts the weight of their past actions. For Kai, it’s not just about admitting what he’s done—it’s about acknowledging that even his current choices come from a place of manipulation, albeit with different intentions.
The line that always gets me is his simple “Yes” when Meiren points out he’s still manipulating events. No excuses, no justifications. Just acknowledgment. That’s when I knew who Kai really was at his core—someone capable of brutal honesty, even when it doesn’t paint him in a favorable light. This understanding of his character will resonate throughout the Hollow Slayers Series as his story unfolds.
So why didn’t this scene make the final cut of Book 1?
Primarily, it was a matter of pacing and revelation timing. This level of confession from Kai would have shifted the power dynamic between him and Meiren at a point in the story where I needed that tension to remain. Their relationship unfolds gradually throughout “Ember” and will continue to develop in future installments of the Hollow Slayers Series. This scene would have accelerated that understanding too quickly for the first book.
There’s also something to be said for letting readers piece together aspects of characters’ motivations themselves, rather than having everything explicitly stated. In the final version of “Ember,” Kai’s redemption arc is more subtly woven through his actions rather than his words, leaving room for expansion in subsequent books.
What I love most about this scene, though, is how it shows Kai’s awareness of his own moral complexity. He doesn’t claim redemption—in fact, he explicitly denies it with that final line. He knows that acknowledging his manipulation doesn’t absolve him of it. This self-awareness sets up fascinating possibilities for his character development throughout the Hollow Slayers Series.
And Meiren’s response—reaching for his hand despite everything—speaks volumes about her own journey. She understands that transformation isn’t a single moment but a continuous process. Her flames meeting his shadows “without burning” symbolizes that potential for change, for connection despite their complicated history.
These are the kinds of character moments that, while they don’t always make it into the final book, inform how I understand my characters. Even though readers don’t see this specific exchange in Book 1, it shaped how I wrote Kai’s and Meiren’s interactions throughout “Ember” and will continue to influence their dynamic in future books.
What do you think? Does this change how you see Kai’s character? Are there other aspects of his relationship with Meiren you’re curious about as the Hollow Slayers Series progresses?
Share your thoughts in the comments, and don’t forget that “Ember” (Hollow Slayers Series Book 1) is currently available for just $2.99—a perfect opportunity to dive into this complex world of shadows and flame before the next installment arrives!

Ember: Deleted Scene Day 1.
Explore a unique glimpse into the world of Ember with this exclusive deleted scene from the Hollow Slayers Series. Dive deeper into the story and uncover the secrets that shaped my characters.
Deleted Scene from Ember Behind the Flames: A Conversation with Tigris Eden about Ember’s Deleted ScenesWelcome to Café Ember, where we explore the fiery world of “Ember” and the creative process behind it. Today, author Tigris Eden shares an intimate deleted scene and discusses why it didn’t make the final cut.
TE: You know, sometimes the hardest part of writing isn’t creating scenes—it’s deciding which ones stay and which ones go. Today I wanted to share a deleted scene that still holds a special place in my heart. It takes place after the main events of the book, when Rose is still learning to control her powers.
This scene explores something I think many readers are curious about: the complicated relationship between Journ and Meiren as they navigate co-motherhood of Rose. There’s so much unresolved emotion there—betrayal, resentment, but also a grudging recognition that they both love this child deeply.
TE: [sips tea] This scene captures something I really wanted to explore—the beginning of healing between these sisters. It’s not forgiveness, not reconciliation, but that first crack in the wall of resentment.
So why didn’t it make it into the final book?
Pacing, primarily. The ending already had so many emotional beats to hit, and this scene would have required setting up a new conflict (Rose’s evolving powers) that would then need resolution. As much as I loved the intimate moment between Journ and Meiren, it felt like it belonged in the next chapter of their story, perhaps in a sequel.
I also struggled with where exactly to place it. The scene exists in this in-between space—after the main conflicts are resolved but before the epilogue. It’s a quieter moment in a book that moves at a pretty relentless pace.
Rose’s fever spiked at midnight, her small body radiating heat that shouldn’t be survivable. Journ placed cool compresses on her forehead, thunder rumbling outside in response to her fear.
“Mama?” Rose murmured, eyes fluttering open.
“Shh, I’m here.” Journ smoothed back Rose’s sweat-damp hair.
“Not you.” Rose’s hand reached past her. “Other mama. I feel her.”
Journ turned to find Meiren in the doorway, frozen in place. Fire flickered across her skin, responding to Rose’s fever.
“Get out,” Journ snarled, but without her usual venom.
Meiren remained still. “Her fire is evolving. I can help.”
“Like you helped me?” The words tasted bitter, but Journ’s arms were already moving, making room on the bed’s edge. “Do what you need to do. For her. Not for us.”
As Meiren’s hands guided Rose’s chaotic flames into steady patterns, Journ watched their matching expressions of concentration. The resemblance struck her like physical pain—not just in their features but in something deeper, something written in blood and power.
“I carried her,” Journ whispered, lightning flickering defensively. “I birthed her. I was there for every first.”
“I know.” Meiren’s voice held no challenge, only acknowledgment. “That matters.”
The simplicity of those words shifted something in Journ’s chest—not forgiveness, not yet, but the first recognition that the situation held complexity beyond betrayal.
Don’t forget that “Ember” is currently 40% off (just $2.99) until May 29th!
Next week: We’ll explore the Han Dynasty and African magical traditions that inspired Ember’s unique magical system.

Author Interview with Faith Marlow
AUTHOR INTERVIEW WITH FAITH MARLOW
**Worldbuilding Brilliance:** Your stories often blend the real and the fantastical seamlessly. What inspires your unique paranormal elements, and how do you ensure they feel grounded within the human experience? When I’m writing paranormal elements into a story, I have to make myself believe it first, even though I may be writing about an ancient vampire that can turn into shimmering fog. And while we as mere mortals may not understand that feeling, we can imagine the freedom, lightness, joy, and the excitement of knowing we are almost indestructible. If I can write emotions that we are all familiar with, I can describe the most fantastical experiences and it will work because the common ground of experience is supporting it.
**Cupid’s Cauldron:** Chemistry crackles between your characters, even when they’re battling vengeful spirits or navigating ancient curses. What’s your secret to crafting such captivating romances that transcend the mortal realm?A key to paranormal romance, or any romance, is your main character has to have a need that can be filled by the love interest. In Being Mrs. Dracula, when Valeria meets Lamond, she is jaded and cynical. She no longer believes in love or thinks that she will ever experience a meaningful relationship. Lamond is full of life and optimistic, willing to love despite the difficulties of their relationship. By contrast, Valeria provides stability, a sense of home, immense love and devotion, and companionship– things that he had never experienced. They find what they lack in each other and that makes them a powerful duo.
**Beyond the Veil:** Do you have any personal experiences or beliefs that influence your portrayal of the paranormal in your writing? If so, how do they shape your storytelling?
There is a scene in Our Fearful Roots that was inspired by real unexplained experience that I had. In the story, Anita (the youngest character) hears her mother call her name from another room, even though she knows her mother has gone to the store.
When my family lived in a previous home, we would commonly hear our names called by another family member from another room only to find out they had not called for us.
I can’t explain what we all experienced, but I know it happened. I wanted to capture the uneasiness and quiet fear that we felt every time we realized what we heard our name called by our husband, wife, or parent, but it wasn’t them.
**Spine-Tingling Twists:** Your plots are full of unexpected turns and thrilling reveals. What’s your process for crafting such suspenseful narratives, and how do you keep readers guessing until the very end?
As an author, you always want to provide readers with a unique experience. I think when writing an interesting story, it is just as important to have an idea of what you don’t want. I normally try to avoid overdone tropes and really think about how I would react if I were the character in their situation. Chances are, you would not fall back on a book you read or a movie you watched. You would figure it out yourself. So I try to do that deduction for my characters.
**Balancing Act:** Paranormal romance often walks a tightrope between humor and horror. How do you strike the perfect balance between these seemingly opposite tones, ensuring your stories are both chilling and charming?
I think it helps to work the humor into an aspect of the character’s personality. Valeria is sarcastic by nature, or design after the things she has experienced. Lamond is charming and witty. Tackett is cynical and crabby. Each of these traits are parts of their personalities and can give a nice bit of comic relief to break the tension.
**Research Rituals:** Do you delve into specific historical periods, folklore, or mythological traditions to enrich your paranormal worlds? If so, share some of your research rituals and how they fuel your creativity.
When I am writing a Being Mrs. Dracula story, I can fall into the rabbit hole of research if I’m not careful. Valeria’s story spans from the Middle Ages in the beginning of Being Mrs. Dracula, all the way up to the 1930’s in book three, Being Dracula’s Heir. I spent six hours recently researching how a radio from the 1930’s would sound and look like when you turned it on, how it was designed, etc. Adding elements of magic also leads to researching folklore for the region you are discussing, which can be so interesting but also a great way to lose an entire day of writing.
When I wrote Scorned Women: Medusa, I wanted to provide descriptions that were recognizable but I wanted to be as historically accurate as I could. So it was important to capture day to day life, housing clothing, etc. The same even holds true for the story I am currently writing that’s set in 1988.
**Character Confessions:** Which character from your paranormal romances surprised you the most during the writing process? Tell us about their unexpected development and how it impacted the story. When Lamond meets Valeria, he is a laborer working in the trenches of Paris. He was poor and uneducated, no family, no roots. While he was already an expert at using his looks to his advantage, he undergoes a huge transformation between from the end of Being Dracula’s Widow to the beginning of Being Dracula’s Heir. While he maintains a bit of his “rough around the edges” charm and sensibility, Lamond has evolved into quite the scholar. He is a voracious reader and quite the detective. It was important for me to give Lamond more to his character arc from having nothing to having anything he wanted. While Lamond enjoys all the luxuries his new life has to offer, he’s also done a lot of valuable self improvement, making him a more well rounded member of the team but person.
**Fan Fiction Frenzy:** Many paranormal romance readers are also avid fanfiction writers. Have you ever encountered fan interpretations of your work that surprised or delighted you? Share your thoughts on the power of fan engagement.
While I haven’t encountered fanfiction of my own stories, Being Mrs. Dracula could be seen as a form of fanfiction, since it serves as a prequel and companion story to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. While I definitely took my creative liberties, it was important to me to be as accurate and respectful to the source material as possible. It is a classic and deserved nothing less.
**Future Foresight:** What are some upcoming trends or tropes you’d like to explore in the paranormal romance genre? Any specific subgenres or themes calling your name?Currently I am working on the first of four books in a series exploring familiar tropes in horror movies. I’m not giving out a lot of details just yet, but my girl Geri is going to defy the tropes, break the rules, and survive the quintessential 1980’s slasher. But unlike those stories, we will get to find out what happens to this final girl after surviving her nightmare.
**Advice for Aspiring Authors:** What pearls of wisdom would you offer to writers who dream of crafting their own paranormal romances? Share your insights on navigating the genre and finding your unique voice.
I would say to a new author is don’t be afraid to let your voice shout. Write authentically and fearlessly in your own style. Don’t compare yourself to others but never stop trying to better your craft. We don’t need the “next” *insert well known author here* but we do need your stories written as only you can.
**Bonus Question:** If you could have any supernatural ability featured in your books, what would it be and why?
If I could have any supernatural ability featured in my stories, it would be to fly. I would love to fade into fog and stardust, just like Valeria, and fly fearlessly until dawn.
