This week, I take a hard look at the continuing war with Iran — and the growing question of how long the United States and the world economy can absorb its costs. With the Strait of Hormuz still largely shut down, emergency reserves and alternative pipelines have helped prevent an oil-price catastrophe so far. But how long can that last? And is Iran betting that it can simply outlast President Trump?
I also look at another cost of the war: the strain being placed on American troops. Reports from the USS Abraham Lincoln describe an extraordinarily difficult deployment, and I share some memories from my own time aboard ship as a young Marine. As more stories emerge about exhausted troops, damaged bases and depleted weapons stockpiles, the political price of the Iran conflict may continue to rise.
Then we turn to politics at home and wars abroad: growing divisions inside both political parties, Israeli settler violence in the West Bank, and the latest developments in Ukraine — including the strange reversal of Washington now asking Ukraine to ease attacks on Russian tankers because of concerns about the oil market.
And I’m introducing a new weekly feature: Story of Courage. We begin with Theodore Roosevelt Jr., who went ashore at Utah Beach on D-Day at age 56, walking with a cane, and helped steady frightened young soldiers under fire. Omar Bradley later called Roosevelt’s actions the most heroic thing he witnessed during World War II.
Then, in Faith & Encouragement, we look at what Jesus taught about persistent, courageous faith — and why Christians should pray, serve and refuse to give up.

It's an index where normal 2025 traffic through Hormuz equals 100. And right now the index is essentially zero. In other words, according to this data, outbound crude shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have fallen from roughly normal levels before the war to virtually nothing.

American voters seem to agree. As the ceasefire unravels, four-fifths think the war will last for “an extended period”, finds a Reuters/Ipsos poll. Nearly half think it will grind on for a year or more, according to our own Economist/YouGov polling. Few find the prospect appealing. Net approval for Mr Trump’s decision to attack Iran now stands at -30% among Americans. The war in Vietnam took six years to become as reviled as the Iran war has become in six months.
To Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia, the remarkable thing is not just the depth of the war’s disfavour but how quickly it set in. “The war with Iran is the most unpopular conflict among Americans since polls have been taken. That has been true since the war’s first day,” he says. The longer it goes on, he adds, “the more costs will mount, and one of those costs will be support for Trump and the GOP in the midterm elections.”

“For he is sent by God. He speaks God’s words, for God gives him the Spirit without limit. The Father loves his Son and has put everything into his hands. And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.” — John 3:34-36

20:57 — Why the risk of war with Iran may be far greater than most people realize

There isn’t support for what he wants, and so he’s going to tank something that he could have taken credit for, for which both parties support? 🤷🏻♂️
And in the end, he’s going to take the L on getting what he wants, and lose even more face by either signing this or holding it up longer.
Thune, a Republican, has told Trump there isn’t support for this. 🤷🏻♂️

Trump’s Iran Deal: Victory, Defeat — or Temporary Truce?
Politics, military, and world events — explained clearly, without the outrage.
Finding common ground, lowering the temperature, and offering Biblical encouragement for difficult times. Learn more about the show here.
⏱️ Timestamps / main stories covered:1:02 — About the document Trump signed with Iran…
13:25 — The real reason the “deal” had to happen?
20:33 — Iran used mass to overwhelm our sophisticated advantages; and the charts prove it.
25:34 — The New York Times blasts the President in an editorial, says Trump lost the war to Iran. Former Vice President (and Republican) Mike Pence agrees…
39:59 — Real talk: does the deal even matter? Will it possibly hold?
46:13 — Faith & encouragement
1:11:18 — About the show and my mission
1:02 — Trump got his Iran deal. Why are so many conservatives furious?Less than a week ago, President Trump was threatening additional strikes. Now he has signed an agreement with Iran. But some of the loudest criticism isn’t coming from Democrats. It’s coming from Republicans, conservative media, and even former allies who say the deal fails to achieve many of the goals the administration originally promised.
13:25 — The real reason the deal may have been unavoidableFor months, the message was that America didn’t need Middle Eastern oil. Then the President acknowledged something very different: that reserves could have become a serious problem within weeks. Was the agreement driven more by military success—or by economic reality?
20:33 — How Iran fought America to a drawThe most eye-opening charts I found this week weren’t about politics. They were about math. While the United States relied on sophisticated and expensive defenses, Iran relied on sheer volume—thousands of missiles and drones launched across the region. The numbers help explain why the pressure to end the conflict kept growing.
25:34 — “President Trump Lost This War”The New York Times editorial board didn’t pull any punches. Neither did former Vice President Mike Pence. I walk through their arguments, why they’re resonating with some conservatives, and whether the criticism is fair or simply partisan spin.
39:59 — The question that matters mostForget who won the news cycle. Forget the talking points. The real question is whether this agreement survives at all. Israel reportedly wasn’t part of the negotiations, key details remain controversial, and opposition is already building from multiple directions. Does the deal even matter if it doesn’t last?

My goals are simple: more unity for our country, less anger (and fear) in the news, and a steady reminder that though we live in a noisy world, we all need God in our lives.

Faith reminder: Real peace isn’t found in a country, a party, or an earthly leader. It’s found in God. Don’t know where to start? Check out my Bible resource page. Struggling with depression or PTSD? Please listen to this. And if you want more faith content, I also host a faith-only podcast called The Search for God.
Books: I write compelling stories that matter — about courage, faith, and the fight for what’s right. I’ve written twelve fast-paced thrillers, with more than 70,000 copies sold. They’re available on Amazon.
To God be the Glory,
Stan R. Mitchell
