U.S. news:

Trump steps back from the brink on Greenland. But the damage has been done.

After two weeks of escalating threats toward Europe, President Donald Trump blinked on Wednesday, backing away from the unthinkable brink of a potential war against a NATO ally during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Trump’s vow not to use military force to seize Greenland from Denmark eased European fears about a worst-case scenario and prompted a rebound on Wall Street. And his declaration hours later after meeting with NATO’s leader that he may back off of his tariff threat having secured the “framework” of an agreement over Greenland continued a day of backpedaling on one of the most daring gambits of his presidency to date.

But his continued heckling of allies as “ungrateful” for not simply giving the U.S. “ownership and title” of what he said was just “a piece of ice” did little to reverse a deepening sentiment among NATO leaders and other longtime allies that they can no longer consider the United States — for 80 years the linchpin of the transatlantic alliance — a reliable ally.

Let’s end with some notes on faith

@cspanofficialPamela Hemphill, a Jan. 6 participant who rejected a pardon from President Trump, testified Tuesday at a House Democratic hearing marking the fifth anniversary of the Capitol attack.   “Once I got away from the MAGA cult and started educating myself about Jan. 6, I knew what I did was wrong,” Ms. Hemphill said. “I am guilty, and I own that guilt. I had fallen for the president’s lies.”   Ms. Hemphill was among nearly 1,600 people pardoned on the first day of President Trump’s second term. She declined the pardon and served 60 days in prison, received 36 months of probation, and was ordered to pay $500 in restitution.   During the hearing, she also apologized to a former police officer who was at the Capitol on Jan. 6.   “I am truly sorry from the bottom of my heart for being part of the mob that put you and so many officers in danger,” Ms. Hemphill said. #pamelahemphill #jan6 #cspan [image error]Tiktok failed to load.

0:52 — Update, show schedule for next week

I’m recording a news episode today — off schedule because of Christmas, and after several quiet weeks as my family walked through my Dad’s illness and passing.

There’s been a lot of news, and I’m putting everything I have into this episode.

I’ll be out next week for a previously planned cruise, but I wanted to show up today, be present, and do the work.

If you haven’t yet, the best way to keep up during an irregular schedule is the email list — that’s where I always post first.

Thank you for your patience, your prayers, and your continued support. It means more than I can say.

I stand on the shoulders of a giant — my eulogy to my Dad

Today’s episode is different.

Instead of a typical show, I’m sharing something deeply personal: the eulogy I delivered for my father.

Marvin H. Mitchell — one of the greatest men in the world.

This was not written for an audience, an algorithm, or a platform. It was written for a room filled with family, friends, and loved ones — and ultimately, for God. I share it here only because so many of you have walked alongside me in prayer, encouragement, and quiet support during these last days.

Two images of my Dad’s work Bible. One of many that he owned.

My father was not a public figure. He didn’t seek attention or recognition. He lived a small, faithful life — and I’ve come to believe those are often the lives that leave the deepest mark.

This eulogy is my attempt to honor him honestly: his faith, his endurance, his humility, and the lessons he passed on without ever needing to raise his voice. It’s also my words of gratitude — for a good father, for a life well lived, and for the hope we have in Christ, even in moments of deep loss.

If you choose to listen, know this: there’s no agenda here. No debate. No commentary on the news. Just a son honoring his dad, and pointing, however imperfectly, to the God who carried him through every season.

Thank you for your prayers. Thank you for your kindness. And thank you for allowing me to share this moment with you.

— Stan

Do not look away

This breaks my heart.

As Russia continues to pound the Ukrainian people, much of the West is looking away.

Not always with cruelty — but with fatigue, distraction, and silence.

Scripture speaks directly to this kind of moment.

Source notes

Selected source notes for podcast and transcript above.

Tonight won’t be a full episode.

This week has been heavy, and I want to honor that honestly.

But let’s start with an awesome compliment that really caught my attention and made my day, then kind of scared me.

I had a pastor — with degrees in Theology, Philosophy, and a Master of Divinity — say this about my podcast.

Like… what?! Honored and absolutely terrified. 😬😬

Now to the heavy stuff…

Something to inspire you.

A final, brief Christmas message

But I didn’t want Christmas to pass without saying this.

Christmas is not about noise, or politics, or headlines.
It’s about God stepping into human history.

The Bible says, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
Not from a palace.
Not with power on display.
But as a child.
Born into poverty.
Born into danger.
Born into a broken world.

Jesus didn’t come to make life comfortable.
He came to make redemption possible.

He came for the grieving.
For the exhausted.
For the fearful.
For those standing at hospital bedsides.
For those who feel like they’re barely holding it together.

Christmas is God saying: I see you. I am with you. And death does not get the final word.

If this season feels joyful for you, give thanks.
If it feels heavy, you’re not alone.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

From my family to yours—
Merry Christmas.
Jesus Christ was born.
And hope is alive.

And with that, thanks for joining us this week.

Example tweet:

Timestamp: (20:20). The big problem with the administration.

Erick-Woods Erickson: Twitter is Rotting the Right’s Brain

Europe is absurd. It is also a strategic partner.

The majority of the angst, however, comes over immigration and the belief that the Islamization of Europe is upon us. The reality is that foreigners make up less than 13% of Germany, and even less in France and the United Kingdom. They just happen to be concentrated in the capitals and get a lot of attention. And the European elite treat them paternalistically, setting up security perimeters around Christmas events instead of cracking down and insisting on assimilation.

Yes, the European elite give us a lot to criticize in their handling of immigration. But also, the non-native populations are not nearly as large as one might think. Muslims make up less than eight percent of the population of Sweden, but on Twitter, you’d think they’ve taken over the country. On Twitter, the United Kingdom is overrun and on the verge of becoming an Islamic nation.

In reality, there are absolutely problems, often dismissed by the European elite who prefer to crack down on speech, but the online community also vastly overstates the problem.

Therein lies the problem with the Trump Administration.

The Biden Administration was overrun with white upper-income progressives from the non-profit world who’d never had a real job and could not relate to the real world.

The Trump Administration is overrun with the kids from wealthy white elites who live their lives online and have concluded that Twitter is real life because that’s where they spend their time.

The Biden Administration got radicalized by the white guilt of progressives. The Trump Administration got radicalized by an online horde of white kids who have convinced themselves that if it is buzzing on Twitter it must be real.

The elites and the experts deserve a lot of blame for people distrusting them, disregarding them, and discrediting them. But we’ve traded experts trained in a field of study for experts who learned everything they know from Twitter. We’ve gone from the elite of Harvard Yard to repeat residents of a Holiday Inn Express.

Timestamp: (27:36). The Trump Administration releases its new security strategy, and I cover the pros and cons of it.

The new National Security Strategy

Experts react to Trump’s National Security Strategy...

👍 PROS (Arguments For the Plan)

Refocuses U.S. strategy on domestic priorities and the Western Hemisphere.

Pushes Europe to take more responsibility for its own defense.

Seeks to end prolonged conflicts like Ukraine through negotiation, reducing long-term U.S. commitments.

Emphasizes economic strength at home, including trade leverage and industrial capacity.

Argues for a more realistic, interest-based foreign policy rather than open-ended global obligations.

Tries to reprioritize U.S. attention toward China and the Pacific, which many analysts view as the primary long-term challenge.

👎 CONS (Arguments Against the Plan)

Weakens NATO unity and undermines the U.S. commitment to European security.

Pressures Ukraine toward territorial concessions, effectively benefiting Russia.

Signals a U.S. retreat from leadership in Europe at a dangerous moment.

Undercuts the democratic alliance system that has been a core U.S. strength for decades.

Risks fracturing the West, creating divisions Russia can exploit.

Damages U.S. credibility and moral authority among allies.

Encourages Europe to seek strategic autonomy away from the U.S.

Potentially reduces long-term American power and influence globally.

Take no prisoners

Welcome! This is the place for balanced takes on politics and world news — without the anger or hype. I believe we can stay informed and stay hopeful.

Every episode wraps up with a few minutes of Biblical encouragement to remind us that faith, peace, and perspective still matter. Learn more.

Timestamps:

Timestamp: (3:59). The double-strike in the Caribbean, and the moral and Biblical principles that no one seems to be talking about. None of us should be laughing or gleeful. (I’m talking to you, conservatives… You, too, liberals…)

Timestamp: (48:35). Trump’s pardon blunder, and why I”m still mad at conservatives who’ve made politics their idol instead of the Lord Jesus.

Timestamp: (1:02:59). Megyn Kelly’s not-so-Christian rants… And what Pete Hegseth said about ethos and the law of war nine years ago… Exactly what happened to these people? What made them change so much?

Timestamp: (1:11:44). Did Minnesota welfare money go to Somali terror group al Shabaab?

Timestamp: (1:14:40). News speed round.

Timestamp: (1:18:17). The faith message for this week.

Timestamp: (1:32:16). About me, about my books, and a little about the mission.

Let’s end with some notes on faith

As you know, if you want true peace, I believe you should look to God and the Bible for that — not a country, not a party, and certainly not an earthly leader, such as our President or the leader of whatever political party you prefer.

Want to learn more about the Bible,? Check out my resource page here.

By the way, if you’re dealing with depression, PTSD, or thoughts of suicide (especially if you’re a veteran), please check out this link.

I also have a podcast that focuses solely on faith called The Search for God.

Here are a couple of episodes you don’t want to miss:

For the vets out there... Dealing with paranoia, PTSD, and the emotional scars you earned from serving.

How it all started: my painful origin story.

Love my moderate, optimistic view of politics and want to know more about how I see things?

Political thoughts from a Southern GentlemanI’m a prior Marine and Republican, who's now a moderate. I write Lincoln-like political thoughts, full of kindness and hope. I truly believe most Americans are good and we need compromise, unity, and love. Not mockery or extremes.By Stan R. Mitchell

I always like to end with an important reminder, whether you’re a Christian or not.

And with that, thanks for joining us this week.

The White House stumbles and MAGA momentum grinds to a halt.

Welcome! This is the place for balanced takes on politics and world news — without the anger or hype. I believe we can stay informed and stay hopeful.

Timestamps:

Timestamp: (1:57). I’m so thankful for this country.

Timestamp: (12:16). The MAGA reign in the House might end sooner than expected.

Timestamp: (17:52). The Trump Administration has decided to go after six Democrats, who advocated against the military obeying “illegal orders” from the President.

Timestamp: (30:03). This is how NOT to push a peace deal… The disastrous week of news for Trump as his team fights among themselves to pursue an elusive peace deal in Ukraine.

Timestamp: (44:05). Just how much foreign influence is going on in our social media landscape these days?

Timestamp: (45:59). It sure seems like we are awfully close to going to war against Venezuela, but I do not believe the Administration has sold this operation to the American people yet.

Timestamp: (49:45). Let’s end with some Biblical wisdom and spiritual encouragement.

Timestamp: (54:31). About me, about my books, and a little about the mission.

U.S. news:

Timestamp: (1:57). I’m so thankful for this country.

From link above:

Trump’s net worth has grown by $3 billion since he took office. His family businesses are raking in millions in the crypto industry, luxury real estate, and investment deals in the Middle East. The Trump Organization is reported to be in talks with Saudi Arabia on a deal that could bring the Trump brand to a government-owned luxury real estate development, flying in the face of the Constitution’s Foreign Emoluments Clause. Meanwhile, Trump hosted Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House today.

Timestamp: (12:16). The MAGA reign in the House might end sooner than expected.

Marjorie Taylor Greene announced her resignation this week, after President Trump called her a “traitor.” Greene had called for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files.
