I trust in you, my God!
Do not let me be disgraced,
or let my enemies rejoice in my defeat.
No one who trusts in you will ever be disgraced,
but disgrace comes to those who try to deceive others.
Show me the right path, O Lord;
point out the road for me to follow.
Lead me by your truth and teach me,
for you are the God who saves me.
All day long I put my hope in you.
Remember, O Lord, your compassion and unfailing love,
which you have shown from long ages past.
Do not remember the rebellious sins of my youth.
Remember me in the light of your unfailing love,
for you are merciful, O Lord.
The Lord is good and does what is right;
he shows the proper path to those who go astray.
He leads the humble in doing right,
teaching them his way.
The Lord leads with unfailing love and faithfulness
all who keep his covenant and obey his demands.
For the honor of your name, O Lord,
forgive my many, many sins.
Who are those who fear the Lord?
He will show them the path they should choose.
They will live in prosperity,
and their children will inherit the land.
The Lord is a friend to those who fear him.
He teaches them his covenant.
My eyes are always on the Lord,
for he rescues me from the traps of my enemies.
Turn to me and have mercy,
for I am alone and in deep distress.
My problems go from bad to worse.
Oh, save me from them all!
Feel my pain and see my trouble.
Forgive all my sins.
See how many enemies I have
and how viciously they hate me!
Protect me! Rescue my life from them!
Do not let me be disgraced, for in you I take refuge.
May integrity and honesty protect me,
for I put my hope in you.
O God, ransom Israel from all its troubles.

The Iran negotiations already seem less certain, and doubt has returned
Hi everyone!
A lot has happened with the situation in Iran since the last podcast, so I thought I’d send out a short update.
But since it’s all so heavy and terrifying, let’s start with a little joke. 🙃🤣
As you know, there’s growing discussion of military action against Cuba.
See here:
Which led to the joke below!
All right. So, unfortunately, none of this is really funny. And honestly, it’s kind of increasingly embarrassing.
Because we’ve gone from “just a little excursion” that will take 4 to 6 weeks to we’re now three months into this thing and there’s a growing debate among analysts that the U.S. may be in a weaker position than many expected.
And the Iranians certainly seem to be in no hurry to negotiate, which also strengthens the argument that we’ve hardly whipped them.
I think the best way to understand what happened in the past few days is to hit the high points in chronological order.
So, President Trump announces on Saturday that “an agreement has been largely negotiated.” (See below, 3/4 of the way down.)
And the response across the board was critical. Such as this comment from a Republican Senator.
Granted, Ben Rhodes is a Democrat. But the Republicans were in agreement and even more furious. Here are but three more examples.
Defense analysts agreed across the board, and here are a couple of examples.
@AriFleischer worst trump foreign policy failure of either term by a long margin.","username":"ianbremmer","name":"ian bremmer","profile_image_url":"https://pbs.substack.com/profile_imag...}" data-component-name="Twitter2ToDOM">The Trump Administration folks tried to knock down these complaints, as you can see in these remarkable comments from the Assistant to the President and White House Director of Communications. (And I will say as an expert on Christianity that these are not very Christian in nature.)
It was so ugly that by the next day, the President backtracked quite strongly.
So after a weekend that briefly looked like a possible breakthrough, we seem to be back in familiar territory — uncertainty.
No matter how you spin it, Iran does not appear to be behaving like a defeated country.
The President appears increasingly eager for an off-ramp, while Iran seems to be in no hurry to negotiate from a position of urgency.
And in negotiations, there is an old saying: he who needs the deal most often has the least leverage.
Iran, meanwhile, is even considering additional sources of pressure.
And yet the Strait of Hormuz matters far beyond this conflict. If strategic waterways begin becoming toll roads or bargaining chips, other countries could follow that example — something that would reshape long-standing assumptions about global trade and international order.
As always, events can move quickly. But right now, this feels less like a story moving toward resolution and more like one still searching for an ending.

From my podcast three weeks ago where I quoted Victor Davis Hanson:
The recent comments of Victor Davis Hanson, on what he’s saying now:
U.S. Intelligence Shows Iran Retains Substantial Missile Capabilities
Trump’s Shrinking Ambitions on China
Secret new assessments say Iran has operational access to 30 of its 33 missile sites along the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting that its military remains far stronger than President Trump has asserted.
The Trump administration’s public portrayal of a shattered Iranian military is sharply at odds with what U.S. intelligence agencies are telling policymakers behind closed doors, according to classified assessments from early this month that show Iran has regained access to most of its missile sites, launchers and underground facilities.
China Increasingly Views Trump’s America as an Empire in DeclineThe president came into office planning harsher trade moves on China than on the rest of the world. Here’s why he’s had to scale them back.
(The below is not a summary or transcript of the above podcast, but rather a compilation of various new sources pulled together.)
China needs the U.S. economy more than the U.S. needs China
The argument is that China’s slowing economy still depends heavily on access to American consumers and markets, especially while dealing with debt problems and weaker growth.
China is vulnerable on energy and trade routes
With instability around the Strait of Hormuz, China has a huge interest in keeping global shipping and oil flowing. That gives Washington leverage.
China backed down before on trade pressure
Even though China retaliated with rare earth restrictions, the broader point is probably that Beijing ultimately prefers stability and continued trade over a prolonged economic confrontation.
The U.S. still dominates militarily and financially
The dollar system, global naval power, sanctions capability, and alliances still give America structural advantages China cannot easily replace.
Xi Jinping may need stability more than Trump does politically
China’s leadership tends to prioritize internal stability and long-term economic calm, which can make Beijing cautious about escalation. Trump, meanwhile, often uses unpredictability as leverage.
HUGE DISCLAIMER: One important thing: a lot of foreign-policy analysts actually argue the opposite right now — that China holds significant leverage because of rare earth minerals, manufacturing dominance, and America’s dependence on Chinese supply chains.
