A friend and I were discussing ancient weapons (as one does), and how they evolved as personal armor evolved.

Anyway, ‘war hammers’ were discussed as being one weapon developed to counter the kind of armor which protected against cutting edges (knives, swords) or even penetrative weapons (those, but also arrows and spears), because crushing force can still injure/kill without needing to get through
