Lutricia "Lu" Clifton writes novels for both children and adults. Most of her adult novels are set in southeastern Oklahoma and include a mingling of Native American cultural beliefs and traditions. She became interested in those cultural traditions while tracing her mother’s Choctaw roots.

She was born in and spent her early childhood in southeastern Oklahoma, then moved to the Texas Panhandle with her family. She completed an associate degree at Amarillo Junior College in Texas and a B.A. and M.A. in English at Colorado State University. She now resides in Illinois with a gray tabby named Mary Jane that she rescued from a shelter. Her oldest son and wife life in Oregon and her youngest son and wife live in Illinois.

Winters here in far northern Illinois make for hazardous travel conditions, so we read books of our choice those months. Book groups are wonderful for writers because the wide range of books that the members choose to read move you out of your comfort zone; it's an opportunity for a writer to expand her horizons, especially those that work in a genre, such as mystery. Books on my summer list include First Women by Kate Anderson Brower; The Wonder by Emma Donoghue; House Rules by Jodi Picoult; Dead Wake by Erik Larson; A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman; Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger, and the Fifth Gospel by Ian Caldwell. Good books, serious readers, plus wine and appetizers, make for lively discussions -- a real growth opportunity!(less)

Without doubt, my favorite couple right now is newlyweds Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito, both of whom are Choctaw tribal police officers in Anne Hillerman's mystery series set on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. I followed Anne's father Tony Hillerman for decades, which is where both Jim and Bernadette were introduced, and I'm so pleased Anne is carrying on her father's series. I loved the way Tony made the southwest setting a character in his books and have striven to do the same with the Choctaw Nation in Oklahoma in my books. Of course, the fact that Tony was born in Oklahoma just 80 miles west of where I was born might also have been an influence (wink).

I also like that both Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito are police officers. So many married couples in mysteries appear as amateur detectives, a genre I do not read. I must say, however, that having a married couple as the focal characters in a mystery eliminates the emphasis on gratuitous sex, which writers today are being pressured to include in their work. By gratuitous sex I mean sex scenes that adds nothing to the plot. I refuse to do this because I feel it cheapens the work--and the writer.(less)
