Lisel Jones is a horror author whose twisted tales have been influenced by dark encounters, mystical landscapes and admin jobs. Many of her works have been dramatised on ‘The Nosleep Podcast’.

In her spare time, she loves horror hiking (either planned or a normal hike turned unexpectedly spooky), and horror movies (top five films: The Fog (1980), American Werewolf in London, Dog Soldiers, The Ritual, Doctor Sleep). Autumn and Halloween never come quickly enough!

Originally from the Wirral (just a ferry across the Mersey to Liverpool), she lives with her husband and three vampiggies in rural North Wales.

Fortunately, it wasn’t as destructive as the one in the story!

Whilst on holiday in Scotland years ago I went on a ghost tour of underground vaults in Edinburgh. In one room the guide told us a story about a friendly ghost who’d been known to hold visitors’ hands. Intrigued, I stretched out my hand, willing it to touch me. I tried to give out positive vibes to attract the spirit. I reached and reached but didn’t feel anything. I kept trying as the group moved onto the next vault. I was the last one out but nothing happened.

In the next room, the guide started recounting events that had taken place there – nothing supernatural at that point, think it was about smugglers or something. I stood at the back of the group by a dark corner. I was still trying to keep up the positive, friendly feelings but suddenly felt completely overwhelmed by sadness and grief. I actually teared up, tried to stop myself sobbing in front of my husband and the group. Then the guide pointed at the corner where I stood and said that a ghost had been reported there – a mother who grieved over her lost child. It seemed I might’ve opened myself to her before learning she’d existed. The feelings of sadness lifted completely as soon as I left that corner.(less)
