Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Ashley Atkins My daughters got into a physical altercation over who would be the first to read Sarah Dessen's brand new book after I bought a single copy to take on…moreMy daughters got into a physical altercation over who would be the first to read Sarah Dessen's brand new book after I bought a single copy to take on our beach vacation. At the time (2009) I was writing fiction and non-fiction for adults, but a little light went off when they were kicking and clawing (not really! ha ha) and I decided to write a contemporary realistic YA novel.

I began making notes and drew upon a tragic event that happened when I was in college in 1989. I worked very hard to handle it respectfully in my book, and to avoid spoilers I won't go into detail at this time.

At some point, TOUGH MAUVE also became a book about Lulu and her father.

I wrote a few sections and then put it away. With a full-time job and house full of kids I just didn't have it in me at the time to write another novel. (My first is still unpublished.)

Last year I was able to keep my butt in a chair over enough evenings and weekends to finish. But for the sake of fun, I set TOUGH MAUVE in 2009-2010, in the same little beach town where I was first inspired.(less)
