Miles Salter is a writer and musician based in York, UK. Born in Amersham in 1971, he went to York St John University from 1990 to 1994 before working as a Youth and Community Worker in Hull. He returned to York in 2002, and subsequently ran York Literature Festival between 2008 and 2016. He gained an M.A. in Creative Writing in 2013, and has worked as a visiting lecturer in Creative Writing. He currently presents The Arts Show on Jorvik Radio. His writing has covered poetry, fiction and journalism. His books include A Song For Nicky Moon (2010), The Border (2011), Animals (2013) and Howl (2015). In 2017 he co-edited, with Oz Hardwick, The Valley Press Anthology of Yorkshire Poetry. His latest volume of poetry is Fix (2020). He likes cheese ...more

Pick up a newspaper any day and you'll find all sorts of stories and potential ideas. What counts are being tuned into them, and also being willing to work with an idea. In some ways the idea isn't enough. What counts are the long hours of writing, turning that little spark into something that really works. After a while, you tune into being creative, and seeing how you can use ideas for poems, or stories, or whatever. Regular writing helps a lot. It gets you into a mindset. (less)
