It feels like a gift to the readers in the best way possible. It doesn't just develop the character arches, but it also gives us all the stories we wish we knew whilst reading the first two novels without compromising the perfect pace she always has for the story at hand. It's a masterclass in how to treat your reader. There wasn't a single page where I doubted that Jaclyn was giving me as a reader a precious insight. I truly believe this whole novel was an act of love and gratitude, because I was left feeling like there's an author out there who knows what we crave and she's poured her heart and soul to deliver it to us.

Von is the ultimate morally gray character. And that is to say... He's my favorite MMC in a loooooong list. I get why he did what he did. I get how he hurt Sage. I felt. it. all. And I love the fact that he's not a knight in shining armor, that he has to actually deal with regret and struggle with his nature and his impulses. That even though you love him as a reader you know you cannot excuse him, and he has to go through it all. And he does. And we love him even harder for it.

And Sage... ladies and gentleman, we have a FMC who's flawed, scared, stubborn, but absolutely gripping in every sense of the word. I feel like the greatest thing this novella has given me is a chance to get closer to Sage, to understand the depths of her pain and her loss, her fears, and to realize she hasn't been weak a single moment in her story. And now, it finally makes sense to me why her memory loss was a hurdle she needed to face. To live what she actually went through made me understand how much she deserved a second chance with no interference. How much Ezra fought for her. How someone who is, by all accounts, desired and loved and envied, can also come out completely broken on the other end. I love Sage more than words could convey.

So I guess my review about why this novella is an absolute gift is this: Jaclyn allowed us to love and hate characters, she used up every single space in her story to bring us closer, to allow us a better view and we, as readers, are all the better for it. This is the kind of enterprise authors should strive for: giving us more whilst deepening our understanding and allowing us more depth into their characters and storylines. We want that. It's just rare to find an author who knows how to give it to us.

When I say Jaclyn is the next best thing, I think I'm wrong. I think she's already there, and it's just our luck that we get to watch her grow. Because her narration, her writing, her characters... Honestly, I don't have a single breath of a criticism to make. This book made me feel like I was cuddling on the most comfortable couch, with the most amazing glass of wine and that time wasn't of consequence. It's hard for me to know where to even begin, since I just finished reading and my heart rate is through the roof.

I first discovered Jaclyn's writing last year and I have been counting down the days until the second installment to her series finally dropped. And drop it did – my jaw following suit.

There is something truly poetic about this installment. Something about feminine power, choice, fear, abuse... things that simply spill from the pages and hit you straight in the soul. And it's amazing to see how brilliantly Jaclyn manages to tackle difficult topics by tucking them into a romantasy setting. There were times where I had to stop and take a breath, because Aurelius is a villain unlike any other. He was supposed to be the Sun, but he is so flawed in such a human way, it makes you scared of him. Scared of his vanity and his brutal ways when it comes to affirming himself. If toxic masculinity was a character, Aurelius would be it. It's harrowing and heartbreaking to read Sage's story, all the ways she suffered in his hands, all the times Von played into it.

I want to point out that I have a real issue with flashbacks in novels. I feel sometimes they can derail the plot, but I have to take a bow because Jaclyn used them so well, it didn't feel like you were reading a book, but two. And not in a bad way; it wasn't overwhelming in information. It didn't make you forget what was happening in the present. It felt as though she knew when to pry the curtains open so you could *feel* everything. There wasn't a single flashback that shouldn't have been there or that didn't move the plot along perfectly, always bringing to light some amazing character development.

There were some spicy scenes I could barely breathe through, but the way she did it... I won't give any spoilers, but when you reach the end of the novel you simply understand everything. I loved seeing Sage taking her sexuality back. How it made her grow, and yet opened her up to some serious heartache. It simply made sense, and it's a testament to Jaclyn's ability to create empathy between her character and her readers that you only understand the full picture when Sage does, too.

I will say, if I have a single criticism it's this: I really missed Von. I wanted more Von, and as I write this I realize it's not a criticism at all. It's a statement to how deeply I've come to care about the characters, flaws and all.

I had the pleasure of following Jaclyn as she grows as an author and I have only one thing to say: she's the real deal. She can make you feel everything, blindside you and then gently bring you back. She can make you see yourself, your heartaches and your traumas as you watch her characters pushed to their limits. She knows how to build worlds like it's no great feat and her lore is so outstanding. I mean, she's one of very few authors to truly get into what mates are, instead of simply assuming it's a trope we all understand. She somehow managed to create her own take, her own spin, and it's so damn beautiful to see how much depth it adds. She made her world entirely hers without relying on overused tropes and I really could not have enjoyed this novel more.

She's definitely going to be one of the great female authors in the genre. Of that, I have no doubt. ...more
