My current manuscript with "Five by Five"

What’s my current manuscript about? Find out with Five by Five…
Christian A. Larsen, author of Losing Touch, tagged me in the “Five by Five” writing meme, in which a writer posts five thoughts about their own work-in-progress (WIP) and tags five other writers.

Last year I wrote two novels, a sci-fi/horror story called Shutdown and The Gate at Lake Drive, the first book in the Dillon the Monster Dick series. When I started my new project, I wanted to do something very horror, and maybe a touch over the top, so I went to work on Maymon.

So, let's get this started:

1. When starting the novel, I'd a hard time with the setting. I kept going between New York and Toronto. I needed a big city with a big museum that also had an underground subway for this to work. I've lived in Toronto all my life and only had limited exposure to New York so I thought the choice was obvious. I was obviously wrong and it's now been set in the Big Apple.
2. The original story of Maymon came to me some years ago. In high school I wrote to original version, which was a short story called Demon's Night. In the late nineties, I wrote a 350 page version of the story, and that is what I'm basing this version on. It all started with the idea of being in an underground subway during an earthquake.
3. The name of the demon, Maymon, came from the Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology. I was given this book by my mom, who wanted to show me about family links in it (mainly the Goodwin witches), and when I stumbled on the part with Mammon, the original story came out. I did change the demon's name. Why? That's a mystery, even to me.
4. There are a few main characters in this one. But the story really focuses on three: FBI agents Darlene Snow and John Wallace, and Dr. Diane Goodwin (yes, that is based on my mother's name) who works for the museum of Natural History. Diane is a bit of a minor character in the first half of the book, but she's the key to so much later on.
5. The book is only about 30% done so far, but that's only because of other projects that have gotten in the way. The final draft should be ready to ship out by the end of September, and I hope I can find a publish fast for this one.

So that’s it–five thoughts about my current work-in-progress. But this meme isn’t called “Five”, it’s “Five by Five”, so I’m tagging Jim Goforth, William Cook, Weldon Burge, Chantal Noordeloos and K Trap Jones.
