A Temporary Woman sample

Greetings everyone! Happy Sunday to you all! For sample Sunday, here's a from A Temporary Woman. Have a great day!

“Mr. Dunbar, I just want to reiterate that I’m sorry I was late. It won’t happen again. I promise.”
“Yes, Ms. Warner,” Mr. Dunbar said slowly. “I’m sure you’re sorry, like the times before. Please. Sit,” he said in an irritated tone. “After the meeting we need to have a discussion about that issue and others that have been troubling me.” His eyes never left hers as he waited for a response.
She stared for a few seconds and then sighed. “Okay.” She reclaimed her seat and rolled her eyes. She had issues with him as well. Now more than ever, and she wanted to tell him so, but considering his frame of mind, she knew it was not the appropriate time.
“Ms. Warner,” he said. “Did you hear me?”
“My alarm didn’t go off.” She held back tears and regained her composure. “But I told you that already.”
He pulled his folded chair closer to her desk. “What’s the matter? Are you okay? You look troubled.”
Giselle nodded her head. “Yes. I’m fine. Go ahead. You can continue.”
He nodded. “As I was saying. I thought you were going to get your tardiness under control. At least that’s what you told me. I need you here on time and attentive when the doors open.”
She shrugged. “Yes. I said that, but I’ve been busy, and my alarm clock is only used as a backup anyway. Normally I get up on my own.” She paused and sat up straight. “Mr. Dunbar. I’m not trying to be disrespectful, and believe me, I’m not complaining, but maybe I should remind you that since the beginning, I’ve been working long hours at Chicago Midtown, without any overtime. Don’t I get any credit for that?”
“It’s called doing your job, Ms. Warner, and I’ve overlooked your tardiness in the past.” He paused. “I find your behavior confusing. I thought you enjoyed giving back to the community. You said a shelter is where you wanted to be.”
Giselle’s eyes widened and she crossed her arms in front of her as she sat back. “Of course I want to be at Chicago Midtown, Mr. Dunbar. That’s not it,” she said in a louder tone. Again, she tried to keep the annoyance at bay, but he always pushed her patience to the limit. She shouldn’t have had to remind him that she’d been working twelve-hour days and that she never complained because she knew he depended on her. He, on the other hand, only validated what she assumed. She had no idea why he was so hard on her. He didn’t appreciate her hard work, and with the slightest imperfection, he was quick to forget it all and throw her under the bus.
“The meeting I scheduled for this morning is important,” he said. “I was coming back from my usual coffee run when I saw you come in. What if I needed to go over some important issues with you before the meeting, Giselle?”
Giselle nodded quickly. “I understand that, Mr. Dunbar, and as usual, I took care of everything before I left on Friday evening.” She paused and her eyes softened in an effort to show him that she was sincere. “Mr. Dunbar, I promise I’ll get the situation with my tardiness under control. You don’t have to concern yourself with it.”
“When we’re in the meeting, I’ll need your full attention and I need accurate notes.”
She nodded and shoved the papers in front of her into a neat pile. “Of course, Mr. Dunbar,” she said in a nonchalant quiet tone. “When have I done any differently?”
He nodded back as if he were trying to read her mind. “Uh huh.”
She knew the meeting was important, but it was only her second time being late. She also knew he didn’t believe her excuse about the alarm clock, but until she was late for a third time, he had no choice but to accept her explanation. Punctuality was a trait she constantly worked on. Out the corner of her eye, she watched him get up and walk over to the small window that faced a narrow side street.
He swiped his index finger along the ledge.
She looked away and exhaled.
“Did you notice the dust on this window seal?”
“No sir,” she muttered in an exaggerated tone, “but I’ll come over and take a look.” She walked over and stood next to him. “Let me look closer.” She bent down under his arm and stood up in between him and the ledge. She looked at the dust mixed with small bugs and then faced him.
Whenever that man looked at her, as he did that very first day, how could she not acknowledge the fact that in her mind, he was one of the most handsome men she’d ever seen? Long braids gathered into a ponytail covered his head, and thick lashes that any woman would die for, shielded warm, beautiful eyes that he surely used to reel in his prey.
However, that was only the beginning of his sex appeal. He had sensuous, juicy lips, and on more than one occasion, she fantasized about sucking on each one of them. She licked her own and imagined how good his lips would feel sampling the lips between her legs. He would be a man that she’d never turn away. His lips, that were usually smooth and relaxed with just a touch of Chap Stick, were now firm and pressed tightly against each other. “Yep,” she said softly. “It’s dusty, but so are the rest of the windows around here.” She sighed. “As I’ve said before in staff meetings, we wouldn’t have that problem if we had more volunteers, and I don’t know if Susan told you, but transients are loitering outside the windows, again. Can’t we get some more beds on the upper level? Winter will be here before we know it, and the homeless are either going to get arrested or freeze to death.” She grinned. “Don’t you worry about it. As soon as I start the new position, I’ll handle it. All the homeless want is some understanding and compassion.”
Mr. Dunbar looked away and took a step back. “I am well aware that the shelter is in need of volunteers and many other necessities. That’s the point of this meeting, but until we’re able to obtain more funding, what are you going to do about that dust?” he said just as softly.
“What I always do,” she whispered. “I’m going to handle it.” She gazed at him and wondered what he was thinking. Was he like her? Did he contemplate the idea of them being in a room together? Naked? It wasn’t an implausible idea. On more than one occasion, their conversation could have easily crossed the line. There was an obvious attraction, and it excited her to think that his thoughts may have mirrored hers, but he never made a move. He always stayed true to form. She reached up and adjusted his tie. She chuckled. “You didn’t get this quite right.” She wiggled it around. “There,” she said as she tapped his chest. “It’s perfect.”
