Precocious morals
Inundated by negativity from the media? Refreshing to read the goodness in this world, especially from a young boy, reinforced by his parents. Each day we're provided with opportunities to make our world a better place. Brock has taught us all a lesson.

Beautiful commitment
Once again we witness the magnanimous nature of police officers across America. Officer Whitten, of California took it to a new level when he adopted the daughter of a drug addicted mother. Proving the finest Americans serve in America's military and peace officers. Many years of happiness, may God shine brightly upon your family.

PTSD or a pathetic ploy?
Few people will express compassion for this woman. Murder a defenseless animal in cold blood and you're sure to draw the ire of the masses. There's no justification to the heinous act two veterans perpetrated on a chained animal. Surely it's reasonable to question the emotional stability of the individuals.
In this case, a female veteran dismissed from the service, currently receiving therapy for PTSD, is gifted a service dog to help her overcome her maladies. The practice has become fairly standard over the last few years. Provide the foundation for a person, in this case the care of an animal, slowly they participate in rehabilitative therapies to deal with the emotional torment which plagues them. Lashing out against an animal unable to protect itself or the chance to save itself through flight devolves cruelty to another level.
The subsequent suicide of Marinna Rollins underlines the scope of her mental suffering. Did doctors overlook a severe case of PTSD, fail to properly diagnose, improperly provide therapy? When a veteran commits two shocking acts in a short period of time, it's best to review the case to uncover if anything was missed, otherwise there may be similar events in the future.

The True Heroes
Every day Americans are inundated with news about role models; the basketball player who drains a buzzer-beater, hitter who knocks out the game winning homer, receiver who lays out for the game winning touchdown, or hockey player who scores the game winning goal. What about the actor/actress who champions a civil rights cause for a photo-op to promote their upcoming film. Then we have our elected officials who purport to know what Americans need, rallying a base of constituents to further their political agenda.
Too often we lose sight of the true heroes; police, men and women who have taken the oath to protect and serve the citizens of their community. Firefighters who're willing to lay down their lives to run into a burning building to save people they don't even know. (Prayers for Firefighter William Tolley of the NYFD who gave the ultimate sacrifice on 4/20/2017). Neither should we discount the teachers, hospital nurses, doctors or other civil servants who keep the fabric of American culture tightly woven.
Among the nameless, faceless heroes of America are the military service men and women who provide protection for Americans, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred sixty-five days a year. They don't ask for awards, bonuses, salary increases or public recognition. Admiration from their comrades and the trust developed between them, goes a long way.
As we enjoy the weekend before us, remember that there are Americans all over the world determined to provide our peace and serenity. Such is the case, now that Abdurakhmon Uzbeki, a terrorist conspirator responsible for the Turkish nightclub bombing, is no longer with us. Regardless of political affiliation, religious ideals, humanitarian viewpoints, recognize there are individuals in this world who strive to eclipse Osama bin Laden's assault on the American way of life. We have the luxury to sleep secure at night, because men and women in the American military have pledged to keep us safe.

Patriot Clinic
Grassroots programs may be the best alternatives for veterans who suffer PTSD. Comrades who've walked the same terrain, faced similar problems, know the internal conflicts they face everyday are ideally suited to provide support and counseling for veterans. The challenge is getting veterans on the grid, keeping them there and assuring them that their problems are not unique.
Group therapy is an especially powerful tool on the road to recovery. Hearing another persons struggles provides a sense of community. It enables a patient identify that they're not alone. Additionally, gathering the courage to discuss ones struggle before the forum is therapeutic, rather than trying to reconcile alone. Relationships developed through the sessions yield lifelong bonds, community and a network for veterans to profess pain they endure.
The Patriot Clinic is a national, noble service for veterans. Their quick action team can intervene on behalf of veterans who struggle with daily life. They also have access to a network of rehabilitative therapies to enhance lives. American benefactors should be applauded for the foresight, dedication and ability to coordinate programs and volunteers which play a material role in the lives of veterans.

Disdain for the military
Virtually every American knows someone who has served in the military. Over three million Americans are currently serving, Service members are represented by husbands and wives, children, siblings and many other people within an extended family.
The military is comprised of dedicated volunteers from every ethnic background, religious belief, socio-economic class, and every state across America. There are a litany of reasons why people choose the military. Some come from impoverished towns and see the military as an opportunity to improve their lives. Others follow in the footsteps of their ancestors who served. One common bond for all, - a love of America and desire to protect her values.
George Ciccariello-Maher, a Drexel University Global Studies professor, has no reverence for the military. When a considerate American citizen provided a first class seat to a service member dressed in uniform, George wanted to "vomit." Rather than analyze how George feels about the military, recognize his misguided antipathy toward the United States military and all the noble people who've joined to make the world a safer place. In this divided political culture it's common for people to become frustrated with the opposing side. Protests against military engagements are understandable to show heightened concern and provide a voice against misguided policies. What is not acceptable is offensive treatment of the men and women who volunteered to protect America and her citizens.
If this is the way Maher feels about American military, what kind of unhinged theories does he espouse to Drexel students? Perhaps the Drexel administrators should take a closer look, especially after incendiary boasts calling for "white genocide."

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to treat PTSD
A growing number of professionals in the medical community laud the effectiveness of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for disabled veterans and those who suffer PTSD and amputees. Patients sit in a chamber for regularly scheduled sessions and have their oxygen content of the air they breathe increased from 21% to 100%. The therapy helps heal cells faster and accelerates the overall rehabilitation process.
There's also growing evidence HBOT is effective in the treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury. While the effectiveness varies on a case by case basis, largely dependent on the severity of the injuries, results are worth examining to determine if the therapy should be expanded. The medical community deems it as worthwhile, yet the Veterans Administration stops short of funding a widespread program. VA is not doubting the results, although they view the small sampling inconclusive for funding.
Once again it's up to private organizations and individual donors to provide funds, identify suitable candidates, schedule regular therapy sessions and produce transportation for patients in some instances. It becomes an age old argument, more so in today's divisive political climate, when is government beneficial compared to a hindrance. There are many noble professionals in the VA who provide outstanding care for veterans and perform their roles admirably. Yet, working in a government bureaucracy, resistant to change, has to be frustrating and the shift to the private sector is understandable. The HBOT program is another instance of a myopic government resistant to change due to costs rather than benefits reaped by everyday citizens we promised to help when they signed on to protect America, her values and her people.

Hike for a cause
As Eli Smith embarks on the early stages of his four corner hike across America, it's worth noting how the bond of these brave veterans is at the forefront of each of their lives. To shed light on a debilitating affliction, PTSD, Eli is venturing through small towns throughout the United States to bring awareness to the epidemic.
PTSD manifests from a variety of events. Car accidents can trigger the condition. For veterans, the risk of PTSD is elevated due to their profession and instances where they place themselves at the forefront of dangerous situations, to protect and preserve the American lifestyle. The torment endured by veterans is difficult to quantify, even tougher to assess unless the individual is a willing respondent, and requires extensive therapy depending on the severity. Efforts to make people aware of this insidious condition are lauded.
If Eli passes through your town, welcome him, ask questions and discover how the community can assist those for whom Eli walks. Godspeed Eli.

Steven McDonald - A man who found forgiveness
Police officers in America have been maligned over the past three years. Whenever one of the men and women in blue violate human rights, shoot an unarmed assailant, commit a crime of negligence, perhaps charged with murder, all pay the price. Video captures the moment where police officers appears to be the villain. Yet the replay is shown ad-nauseam, all the while media pundits question the act, judge and recommend punishment. The end result, all public protectors are systematically placed in the same bucket and scrutinized as a rogue lot.
Clear thinking Americans are able to see past this hyperbole. Vitriol is spewed for ratings, enrage the viewer and they're hooked. For the peace officers, their daily job becomes more difficult. When they arrive on calls, the public pulls out cell phones and stick it in the officer's faces as they try to assess the situation. This drives a wedge between the police and the public they've sworn to protect.
If anyone had reason to harbor anger, Officer Steven McDonald had the right. Early on in his marriage, with his wife three months pregnant, the life he knew and enjoyed was stripped away in seconds. No because of what he did or said, but what he represented. With life inexorably changed, Steven reached out to God for guidance. What he found is the one of the most difficult traits a human can attain - forgiveness. Not halfhearted forgiveness, but a burning element that prompted Steven to spread his message across the globe.
The number of lives Steven McDonald touched, relationships mended, will never be quantified. His message of forgiveness is an inspiration for all humans to strive, not only for personal growth, to bring acceptance of one another regardless of our differences. Jesus undoubtedly welcomed his brother with open arms for his acts.
