My second book, The Cubicle is finally ready. It should have made its release two years back, fortunately for me and you, it didn’t make it. It had to be rewritten fully. Thanks to Karthik Nilagiri for his twenty pages feedback on the book, Priti Shaw for editing the book word by word, Arun Dhandapani for the cover photo.

Amazon has shortlisted The Cubicle for its publication. That is only the very basic initial stage. Before they take it further they want to see the potential market for the book. 

So they have posted the first few chapters of the book in their site. Based on the nominations that the book receives, they will act further on publishing the book.

What is The Cubicle about?

"This book is about a writer who wants to write about life (or the lack of it) in the IT industry. After weighing the available options, he decides to join a company and then write about it. With fake experience, he manages to clear the interview and joins the company. Within months at work, he gets a long term onsite opportunity which he desperately avoids strategically. He even gets politically entangled, not the office politics which is obvious anyways, but in Indian politics. He excels in his career and even completes the book, until he falls in a dilemma over a career making decision.

He wasn’t doing everything alone, he had a partner throughout.

Someone with no prior IT experience survives and excels in a top IT company?

I must be kidding.

Or this has to be the best super hero story?

Or the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious ‘fiction’ written ever?

Or book full of lies starting from this synopsis?

The Cubicle is a fictional non-fictional book with a pinch of sarcasm and fun. The fictional elements are added to the book to make you believe the ‘unbelievable(s)’, with a very thin line of story woven around.

ஹைதராபாத்தில் ஆறு வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு ஒரு ரேடியோ சேனல் (தெலுங்கின் செம ஹாட்டு மச்சி) நடத்திய கார்ப்பரேட் டான்ஸ் போட்டி. கடைசியாக ஆட வந்தது சத்யம் (இல்லை டிசிஎஸ்) பி டீம் (இரண்டு டீமை அனுப்பியிருந்தார்கள்). மொத்தம் 5 நிமிஷம். மேடையில் இரு பெண்கள், நான்கு ஆண்கள் என ஆரம்பித்தார்கள். ஹிந்தி பாடல் ஒண்ணு. சுமாருக்கும் கீழான பெர்ஃபார்மென்ஸ். இரண்டு நிமிடங்களில் போர் அடிக்க ஆரம்பித்து விட்டது. திடீரென மேடையில் சலசலப்பு. ஒருவர் இந்திய கொடியுடன் வலம் வர, பெண் ஒருத்தி பாரத மாதாவின் உடையில், இன்னும் பலர் இந்தியாவின் பல மாநிலங்களின் பாரம்பரிய உடையில் நடந்து வந்தனர். ஏறக்குறைய ஒரு ஃபேஷன் ஷோ மாதிரி. டான்ஸ்க்கும் அவர்கள் பண்ணின கூத்துக்கும் சம்பந்தமில்லை. இந்திய பண்பாட்டை பற்றி சொன்னதால் அவர்களுக்கே பெஸ்ட் டான்ஸ் பெர்ஃபார்மென்ஸ்க்கான பரிசை கொடுத்தார்கள்.

இப்படித்தான் எனக்கு கத்தி. படு சுமாரான கதை. சொல்லப்பட்ட மெசேஜ்க்கு (விவசாயிகளின் பிரச்சினை) எதிர் வாதம் பண்ண முடியாது. அதனால் ஹிட் படம். சூப்பர் டூப்பர் ஹிட்டாகப் போகும் படம்.

மொத்த மூணு மணிநேரத்தில் ஒரு 30 நிமிஷம் தான் எனக்கு ஈர்த்தது. அதிலும் அந்த ப்ளாஷ்பேக் ஒரு டாக்குமெண்டரிக்கான சப்ஜெக்ட். அது சினிமாத்தனமாக்கப்பட்ட விதம் குட். கண்கள் நிறைந்தது.

அதுக்காக முருகதாஸும், விஜயும் இந்த பிரச்சினைக்காக களத்தில் இறங்கி போராடுவாங்களான்னு கேட்பது எல்லாம் தேவையில்லாதது. டிரைக்டர்ஸ் தயாரிப்பளாருக்காக படம் எடுக்கறாங்க. தயாரிப்பாளர்கள் ரசிகர்களின் பாக்கெட்டுக்காக படம் எடுக்கறாங்க. ஆனா, முருகதாஸின் சமீபத்திய படங்களில் ஒரு மாதிரியான வியாபார யுக்தி புரியும். ஏழாம் அறிவிலும், துப்பாக்கியிலும், கத்தியிலும் அவர் பண்ணுவது பெரிய வியாபார அரசியல். ஏழாம் அறிவில் தமிழர்கள் தமிழர்கள்ன்னு உணர்ச்சி பொங்கும் வசனங்கள் (தெலுங்கில் இதையே ஆந்திராக்காரன் என பொங்க வைத்ததாக சொல்வார்கள். தெரியவில்லை), துப்பாக்கியில் ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்கான வசனங்கள், இதில் விவசாயிகளுக்கான மேட்டர்ஸ். அவரது படங்களை பாக்காதவங்களையோ, பாத்து புடிக்கலைன்னு சொல்றவங்களையோ, தேசத் துரோகி மாதிரி ப்ரொஜெக்ட் பண்ணும் எதிர்வாதம் செய்து வாயை அடைக்கும் சூட்சமம் தெரிந்தவர். நல்லாயிருக்குன்னு ஒத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டிய கட்டாயம்.

சினிமாவாகப் பார்த்தால் துப்பாக்கி நீட் எண்டெர்டெயினர். ராணுவ வீரர்கள்ன்னு நெஞ்சை நக்கலைன்னாலும் நல்ல படம். வீக் கிளைமெக்ஸ், லாஜிக்கல் பிழைகள், முட்டாள் போலீஸ், லூசு மிலிட்டரி ஆபீசர் ஜெயராம் என பார்த்தாலும் துப்பாக்கி தமிழ் சினிமாவின் கடந்த பத்து வருடங்களின் பெஸ்ட் எண்டெர்டெயினர். ஏழாம் அறிவு மொக்கை. அந்த வகையில் கத்தி சுமார் ரகம் தான்.

முக்கியமான பிரச்சினையை சொன்னதால் முருகதாஸ் ஜெயிச்சுட்டார். தெலுங்கு, ஹிந்தின்னு நிச்சயமா அங்கேயும் ஜெயிக்கும்.

இது வரை வந்த வசூல் வேட்டை தயாரிப்பாளருக்கு நல்லது. முதல் நாள் வசூல் சாதனைக்கு முழுக்க காரணம் இவர்கள் தான். அதிகமான தியேட்டர்களில் ரிலீஸ், அதிகமான ஷோக்கள், டிக்கெட் விலையும் அதிகம். இதனால் வசூல் அதிகமாகும் என்பது சிம்பிள் கணக்கு தான். இதனால் பெருமை தயாரிப்பாளர்கள், தியேட்டர் ஓனர்ஸ், 500 1000 என செலவு செய்த ரசிகர்கள் தான்.

விஜய் ரசிகனாக எனக்கு இது ஏமாற்றம் தான். நடிப்பில் ஒரு படி கம்மிதான். டான்ஸ்க்கான ஹிட் பாடல்கள் இல்லை என்பதால், அதிலும் ஏமாற்றம். காமெடியும் இல்லை. சாரி விஜய். ஆனால் படத்தின் ஸ்க்ரீன் ப்ரெசன்ஸ் செம. கலக்கியிருக்கிறார். துப்பாக்கியில் இவர் இல்லாத காட்சிகள் ரொம்ப குறைவு. இதிலும் அப்படியே. அத்தனை காட்சிகளிலும் இவர் மட்டுமே நிறைந்திருக்கிறார்.

எப்படிப்பார்த்தாலும் ரஜினியின் இடத்தை எல்லா வகையிலும் நிரப்பும் பலம் கொண்ட ஒரே நடிகர் விஜய் தான். வேற@@ யாரு இருக்கா?

அநிருத் பிண்ணனியில் கலக்கல். தேவா மாதிரி இவர். ஹிட் கொடுக்கும் இசையை தரும் வித்தையை அறிந்தவர். எப்படிங்கறது எல்லாம் தேவையில்லாதது. ஆனால் பாடல்களில் கோட்டையை விட்டுட்டார். அதிலும் விஜய்க்கான அறிமுகப்பாடல், விஜய்க்கான மிகவும் மோசமான அறிமுகப்பாடல். பாட்டை விஜயும் முருகதாஸும் கேட்டுத்தான் படத்தில் வைத்தார்களா?

சமந்தாவுக்கு சீக்கிரமே குழந்தை குட்டின்னு செட்டில் ஆக ஆசையாம். சீக்கிரம் ப்ளீஸ்.

பாவம் வில்லன். ஹிந்தில இவரையே ஹீரோவா போடறேன்னு சொல்லி இந்த ரோல்ல நடிக்க வச்சுட்டாங்க போல.

கத்தி பத்து துப்பாக்கிக்கு சமம்ன்னு டிரைக்டர் சொல்லியிருந்தார்.

ஹீரோவை கொல்ல 50 பேரை கத்தியுடன் அனுப்பறதுக்கு பதிலா ஒருத்தனிடம் ஒரு துப்பாக்கியை கொடுத்து விட்டுருக்கலாம். அப்படித்தான் படமும்.

துப்பாக்கி = 50 கத்தி.

மீடியால அவங்களைப் பத்தி வந்தாத்தான் பிரச்சினைக்கு முடிவு வரும்ன்னு அந்த மீடியால நியூஸ் போடச்சொல்லி அலைவதும், அவங்க வந்ததும் அவங்களை குறை கூறுவதும் முரண். விவசாயிகள் தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்ட வீடியோ வந்த பிறகும் அந்த பிரச்சினை தமிழ்நாட்டில் யாருக்குமே தெரியாத மாதிரி காட்டியிருப்பதும், அந்த சென்சேஷனல் நியூஸை மீடியா வேண்டாமென ஒதுக்கித்தள்ளுவது என்பது அர்னாப் கோஸ்வாமிகளை அவமானப்படுத்தும் விஷயம். ரோட்டில் வரிசையாக கட் அவுட் வைத்து விருது கொடுக்கும் அளவுக்கு பிரபலமான ஜீவாவை யாருக்கும் தெரியாத மாதிரி காட்டுவதும், சென்னையின் ப்ளூப்பிரிண்ட்டை ஒரே நைட்ல கொண்டு வர்றதும் எல்லாம் அபத்தம்.

இத்தனை இருந்தாலும் விஜய்க்காகவும், அந்த மெசேஜ்க்காகவும் நிச்சயம் ஹிட்டாக்க வேண்டிய படம் இது. Must watch.

What was common about the following books to me?

The Oaths of Vayuputras

The Krishna Key

Bankerupt

Inferno

They were all best sellers, but they were all equally boring.

Inferno, I had to skip atleast 75% of the book to reach the end.

Oaths, I didn’t even complete it.

Krishna Key, very predictable, weak plot.

Bankerupt, I completed without skipping a page, not before noticing many logical flaws, and the story was the same as the author’s earlier books. Looked like this was written in a hurry and the climax and the lead to it was bad.

In between all of this I read The Fall.

I have different set of standards when I read and write. As a reader, the standards are pretty high. I read majorly for the story, and nothing else. If the plot isn’t interesting to read, then I start looking at the number of pages left to be read.

On that note, The Fall was a masala mix. It had a plot, murders, clues, puzzle, romance, investigation and all. To me, most importantly, it was fast paced and an easy read.

Is it better than all the above four books? Yes, to an extent. It also has its own flaws. But this is only Vijay’s first novel.

The things I liked in the book.

He took great interest in this book and wrote this in a very short span of time. He completed it and published it. Only his manager can tell how was his performance at work during those days. 

The cover design was refreshing.

The place of the events in the book, being in France gives a grand feel to the book.

It starts with a murder. So you are hooked up to the story from page one.

The poems gives a different look to the book. For someone who doesn’t read poems, it was easy to skip those pages (pun intended).

For some reason, the thought of the characters and plot kept waving around me for some time, even after completing the book.

What could have been better.

The Puzzle was good. But it’s link to the story is weak. What is the probability of the solution of a complicated number puzzle leads to someone’s bank account number or social security number?

Why should the story happen in 1983? I assume a reason, may be if this story was to happen today, then it would have been easy to crack the case. Vijay wanted to complicate the investigation may be.

Why is the story set in France?

The subplot or the reason for the murders was weak. That too when you say that that particular story written as a book is a bestseller.

Few of the murders are artificially linked.
