My Job

I thought I'd share a few thoughts on writing, as this is my first ever blog entry.
I reckon I've got the best job in the world. By telling stories, I get to share all my imaginary friends in their imaginary world with a whole range of people, and get them to visualise them too, and enjoy what they do. I also get to entertain people and make them laugh - hopefully!
I've wanted to do this for so long that it's like a dream come true, and I'm grateful every day that I get up and open up my laptop.
The thing that has really surprised me about telling stories is that sometimes I just stare at the screen in disbelief at what has just happened in the narrative. It's true what other writers have said; sometimes the characters do the most unexpected things, which can affect your whole plot outline.
So many readers have said in their review of Death of an Old Git that they guessed who did it very early on. I applaud these people, as my original murderer was killed about halfway through, leaving me simply open-mouthed with horror. I have learnt that this is the time to revamp the whole plot, if it looks like the unexpected is going to work. It sounds mad, but it's true!
I find it very satisfying how the characters develop with further episodes in their careers, and feel I know them almost as people, much more rounded and three-dimensional than they were when they were created, and I wouldn't be surprised to be hailed by them in the street - although what they would be doing in the Dordogne, I have no idea.
Just as a bit of a heads-up, Falconer and Carmichael were based on real people I used to know, but it wasn't until my pre-proof reader in the UK told me, that I realised that the grotesque Lady Amanda Golightly was actually me, in about twenty years time. Since my realisation, I have had a special fondness for her, and salute her idiosyncratic behaviour and outrageous outspokenness.
I am also becoming increasingly fond of Holmes and Garden, and feel that they have a long and successful partnership ahead of them, getting everything wrong, then right, but for all the wrong reasons.
Thank you for reading this and giving me a little of your valuable time. I'll be back soon to chunter on about what I'm working on at the moment.
