I'm a whole lot of things--published author; lover of mysteries, thrillers and horror; amateur baseball player; overall baseball enthusiast; reader; hiker and biker and walker; rescuer of dogs, one-at-a-time; greyhound, bichon and James Russell Terrier-enthusiast; Fenway live-in and wine snob, just to name a few things. Please visit my author website: stevenebelanger.com. There you'll find many links to my published stories. You’ll enjoy the writing found there! Each one is just 99 cents.—with the dreaded legal disclaimers, of course. If you like the stories, spread the word! There’s a blog, recommendations, etc. If you like mysteries and horror, it’s the place for you. ...more

Movie: Lizzie, about Lizzie Borden. With Chloe Sevigney and Kristen Stewart

I wasn't feeling great today, so I watched Lizzie, a movie I've wanted to see for awhile, on HBO Max. It's not supposed to be nonfiction, but it sticks close to the facts--except that it combines Uncle John with the town constable. This is unfair. The real Constable/Sheriff did a great job, actually, while the real Uncle John was indeed a shady character. As shady as he is in the movie, I don't kn

Human Croquet by Kate Atkinson

So well-written and interesting, it wasn’t until the middle of the book before I realized that nothing much was happening, and I can’t tell if that’s a good thing or not. You can definitely see the character traits that would find its way into slight ...more

A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson

I gave this book 4 out of 5 only because the writing and themes are very similar to Life After Life, which is clearly better. Both chronicle the (many) lives of Ursula and Teddy, and all of their offspring, siblings and friends/lovers/relatives. Iron ...more

So the easy part of this review is that you should read this. It took me about 2 1/2 days to read it all, and the regret is that there wasn’t more to read. I’ve been very fortunate to have back-to-back readings of books that made me not want to do an ...more

Long understood to be a classic (if not THE classic) of its genre, I found that the most amazing thing about this book is that it is an unbelievably great, tense and intense read, incredibly well-written—even though I’ve seen the film a ton of times ...more

Red Dragon by Thomas Harris

It’s hard to believe this book was published in 1981, decades ahead of its time and subject matter, and that Thomas Harris had one of the best 1-2 punches of all-time in this genre, as this was followed by The Silence of the Lambs. He must’ve had the ...more

Difficult book to like, but the premise is intriguing: an author emails a chapter at a time to a beta-reader, who emails her his comments back. She’s in Australia, he’s in America, and we get to read her first draft and his comments, and the fallout ...more

Very good entry in the series, second-best in my view, though I haven’t read them all. Oddly told, as the narration keeps its light fluency, yet the story is serious, the characters are likable (even the bad ones) and the ending is lightly-told downe ...more

Best of the Argyll series so far, though I haven’t read all of them, and the ones I have, out of order.

This one has a Knives Out tone, though those of course came much later than this. A flippant tale of the crazy rich, with the hapless art procurer

Good book, not great. This series doesn't compare to Fingerpost. But good flow created by differing third person accounts.

Very good, quick read, by the author of An Instrance of the Fingerpost, which will always be his masterpiece. Pears will always have that line on the cover of all of his books, as he does on this one.

I didn’t think to see which of the other books I’d

Hey, Emma! What's up? I went to the website you mentioned, and it says it no longer exists.

Emily (The Litertarian) Hey Steven,

Been awhile since we exchanged blog comments, but I wanted to invite you to a really neat website I've come across: authorsunleashed.com

Since you are a pretty serious writer I thought you might be intersted. For practice or fun or whatever. Hope to see you there :-)
