The Gluten Gladiator Speaking Events-A Recap
“A Pain in the Neck AND Back”
So there you have it, two solid weekends of gluten free professional speaking
engagements and dozens upon dozens of copies of “Defeat Wheat” that were hand
signed by your friendly Gluten Gladiator®. In the past, I would say that a majority of
the audience members who come and speak personally with me (after the speech) were
registered dietitians and nutritionist. They applaud the fact that I encourage Celiac
newbies and gluten intolerants to shop the perimeter of the store – better known as The
Golden Horseshoe. They praise the slide where I say “the best gluten free food items
have been gluten free for millions of years”. And, a picture of fresh produce, dairy, meat,
and seafood accompanies that slide.
However, these past two weeks have struck a nerve (pun intended) with a whole new
inquisitive group. The number of chiropractors who have approached me after my
appearances have grown ten fold. Perhaps it is the fact that I tell the story about the
last time that I was severely glutened. About a year ago, I purchased a fresh item that
had undeclared breadcrumbs in it. So what did my system do? It flushed my body with
antibodies – as gluten is perceived as a poison and it was a full out war from within.
The internal chaos that occurred caused my sciatic nerve to seize up and create the
WORST pain that I had ever had in my life. After 4 sessions of physical therapy and two
acupuncture visits, I was finally able to walk after eight days. Yes, eight days.
A big light bulb obviously went off over the chiropractor’s heads as they rushed my
book signing table. Could gluten be the culprit for the increase in spinal, nerve, and
chronic pain visits to their offices? Could undiagnosed Celiac Disease be the reason
that a number of younger people are making visits to their clinics? Perhaps that pain in
the neck/back can be directly correlated to gluten? It’s something that the chiropractors
never thought about before my presentation.
If you’ve read my book, you know that the second to last chapter is called T.W.O.N.G.
(insert a spring-like sound effect here). It stands for Two Weeks Of No Gluten. A
majority of the chiropractors that approached me are going to suggest this to their
patients with pain issues. After 2 weeks, the patient will simply let the body decide what
happens, or better yet, what doesn’t happen when gluten is eliminated.
Check “back” with me once the results come in.
