When Lynn Franklin was a child, she often accompanied her jeweler grandfather on his local buying trips. As they traipsed the grungy streets of Pittsburgh, Grandpa carried a battered briefcase filled with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires. Rather than panic -- which can exacerbate writer's block -- I do what I call a writer's warm-up. I reach for a book by a favorite author and choose a passage that is similar to what I need to work on at the moment. For example, if I need to write a high-tension scene, I'll locate a passage that made my heart race. I'll then type that passage onto a blank document. By actually carrying that writer's words from my brain and into my fingertips, I'll get a feel for how the writer handled the issue I'm trying to solve. At that point, my own characters start to stir (they have their on way to handle crisis, thank you very much). Usually, after typing only a paragraph or two, I'm ready to let my own story take control. End of writer's block.(less)
