I was born to a teen mom in rural Delaware and am the granddaughter of a trucker and a General. With free spirits as parents, I've moved 30 times, living in New York, Georgia and South Florida. I have six siblings, one of whom is actually my aunt, and I've done a lot of things to pay the bills from telephone surveys to waiting tables. I've been a line cook, worked in a pottery studio, a Waldorf kindergarten and even a strip club. In 2009 I received my MFA in Creative Writing from Florida Atlantic University. I taught writing at FAU, Barry University and Palm Beach State College. I currently live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with my family. I'm a regular contributor to elephant journal, Babble, and Scary Mommy. My work has appeared in the Sou ...more

Christmas in 2020 - A Step by Step Guide

Hi, everyone! This has been a hard year, and the holiday season this year is unlike anything we’ve ever experienced before. That’s why I decided my usual repost of my most popular story of all time Christmas in the 70s vs. Today wasn’t quite gonna cut it. We needed a 2020 update.

I’m not making light of the pandemic and the 300,000 plus lives gone forever or the countless number of people who have

“No one can argue with that. Restaurant work is total hell. I’m not cut out for waitressing. I tried that when I was eighteen and worked in a dessert shop for all of about three weeks. That was my third job. I’m not the world’s greatest customer service person. I tend to get surly and when people ask me to get them things my initial reaction isn’t to smile and oblige. It’s to tell them to get off their ass and get it themselves. This quality, combined with my extreme clumsiness (it’s physically impossible for me to walk and carry a tray at the same time) rules out serving.”
Victoria Fedden, Amateur Night at the Bubblegum Kittikat

“Heartache is a real thing. It’s not a metaphor or a term saved for shitty poetry, but I never knew that until I felt it in my body. I’d been sad before: lonely, scared … depressed, too. I’d known plenty of regrets and failures, but I had never felt anything this dark and heavy pressing into my chest. Every cliché about sorrow is true. You really do feel like you’re drowning.”
Victoria Fedden, This Is Not My Beautiful Life: A Memoir

“we don’t get the glory or the recognition we feel we deserve.”

“Men always say that as the defining compliment, don’t they? She’s a cool girl. Being the Cool Girl means I am a hot, brilliant, funny woman who adores football, poker, dirty jokes, and burping, who plays video games, drinks cheap beer, loves threesomes and anal sex, and jams hot dogs and hamburgers into her mouth like she’s hosting the world’s biggest culinary gang bang while somehow maintaining a size 2, because Cool Girls are above all hot. Hot and understanding. Cool Girls never get angry; they only smile in a chagrined, loving manner and let their men do whatever they want. Go ahead, shit on me, I don’t mind, I’m the Cool Girl.

Men actually think this girl exists. Maybe they’re fooled because so many women are willing to pretend to be this girl. For a long time Cool Girl offended me. I used to see men – friends, coworkers, strangers – giddy over these awful pretender women, and I’d want to sit these men down and calmly say: You are not dating a woman, you are dating a woman who has watched too many movies written by socially awkward men who’d like to believe that this kind of woman exists and might kiss them. I’d want to grab the poor guy by his lapels or messenger bag and say: The bitch doesn’t really love chili dogs that much – no one loves chili dogs that much! And the Cool Girls are even more pathetic: They’re not even pretending to be the woman they want to be, they’re pretending to be the woman a man wants them to be. Oh, and if you’re not a Cool Girl, I beg you not to believe that your man doesn’t want the Cool Girl. It may be a slightly different version – maybe he’s a vegetarian, so Cool Girl loves seitan and is great with dogs; or maybe he’s a hipster artist, so Cool Girl is a tattooed, bespectacled nerd who loves comics. There are variations to the window dressing, but believe me, he wants Cool Girl, who is basically the girl who likes every fucking thing he likes and doesn’t ever complain. (How do you know you’re not Cool Girl? Because he says things like: “I like strong women.” If he says that to you, he will at some point fuck someone else. Because “I like strong women” is code for “I hate strong women.”)”
Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl

“You risked your life, but what else have you ever risked? Have you risked disapproval? Have you ever risked economic security? Have you ever risked a belief? I see nothing particularly courageous about risking one's life. So you lose it, you go to your hero's heaven and everything is milk and honey 'til the end of time. Right? You get your reward and suffer no earthly consequences. That's not courage. Real courage is risking something that might force you to rethink your thoughts and suffer change and stretch consciousness. Real courage is risking one's clichés.”
Tom Robbins, Another Roadside Attraction

“You must give up the life you planned in order to have the life that is waiting for you.”
Joseph Campbell

“No matter how bad things are, you can always make things worse.”
Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

“We face up to awful things because we can't go around them, or forget them. The sooner you say 'Yes, it happened, and there's nothing I can do about it,' the sooner you can get on with your own life. You've got children to bring up. So you've got to get over it. What we have to get over, somehow we do. Even the worst things.”
