All royalties from my books are passed on to global charities. Having grown up with certain privileges, I want to use my work to make a small difference in the world.

Peter photo I was born in Aberdeen in 1951 and spent part of my childhood in Malaya, where my father was attached to the Malay Regiment. I was educated at Bedford School, trained in law at Guildford College of Law, and worked with an old-established firm of solicitors in Exeter.

In the 1980s I taught Law and Business Management to General Motors dealerships across the UK. By 1989 I had succumbed to the call of the sea, built a sixty-foot sailing boat, and in 1992 launched her in Plymouth.

My family and I spent the next two years sailing the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Caribbean.

Working on my next book

I hope you will have read - or at least sampled, "The Colombian Exchange".

Already I am a third of the way into my next Nicaraguan novel "Viva!" Set between 1967 and 1978, it explores a young man's road from poet to revolutionary; what drives a young adult to take the other path - to risk love and happiness in order to free his nation from dictatorship.
