To make a long story short...

I sat there in front of the Tibetan Lama, wearing my maroon robes after years of studying Buddhism and said, "With all due respect, I don't believe the Buddha ever intended for his teachings to get THIS complicated!"

My teacher looked around at all the statues of deities with multiple arms and said, "The Buddha didn't do this!" he chuckled, "The Tibetan culture did; this is their way. Why don't you try Zen? I think you'd like it!"

So I bowed-out of the temple, took off my robes, and moved into a Zen monastery far from home. I was determined to find a simpler depiction of the Buddha's valuable teachings.

Blind Spots

We all have bind spots, and I was recently made aware of one of my own. Since I'm committed to being honest and transparent, it's important that I not only share my "Ah-ha Moments" with you, but also my "Oh-oh Moments" when I fail to see things clearly. I thought exclusivity was the same as discriminatory, but now, thanks to you, I see how my own point of view was limited because of a blind spot.

I was fortunate to hear Timber speak at a local book signing. His message is one of utmost importance that has been around for a long time; his approach to Buddhism makes it approachable and applicable for everyone. Everyone I know that has his book has either bought a copy for someone else, sometimes many others, or recommended it. That is what I am doing here. Spread the word, he may just be helping us change the world by helping us change ourselves.
