Bulls Island, New Jersey Recreation Area
Nature’s Mediation Nourishing the Soul
Bulls Island is a beautiful recreational area that is located along the Delaware River and Raritan Canal in New Jersey. In pre colonial days it was known as Paunnacussing to the native inhabitants. Then after 1700, the Island was owned by Richard Bull. Improvements included the construction of a wing dam to send water into the canals feeder. Early in the 1800’s a pedestrian bridge was built between Raven Rock, NJ and Lumberville, PA. The entire area is a nature lovers paradise to view the wildlife including beavers, bears, deer bald eagles and dozens of beautiful trees and wildflowers.
The tranquility of the trails through the wooded areas is magnificent. The pedestrian walking bridge crosses the Delaware River to the Pennsylvania side with spectacular panoramic views. The Black Bass Hotel and Restaurant can be seen from the bridge and the history of the restaurant is enough to encourage hikers to stop for lunch or fine dining in the evening. Yes, even George Washington was there back in the day!
