When a story is halted then I will write small diary entries or thoughts and emotions that I jot down quickly on scraps of paper. I pull inspiration from my surroundings, people, life and everyday ordinary and extraordinary happenings. I write about the mundane as well as the fascinating. To do this, I submerge myself in my city. I take jobs where I meet people, I observe without judging and I practice my art daily.

My short story collection Diaries was inspired by my life and my work as a criminal defense paralegal. When I wanted to write my novel, Lost Souls Cafe, I took a job as a waitress and barista and wrote my inspirational thoughts on a waitress tablet in-between customers and shifts.

Just as a performer may identify themselves as a "method actor" I am a method writer. I have found that if I take constant notice of the energy that swirls around me and embrace it with an open mind and open heart I will have something to write about.(less)

When I write fiction, I enjoy the walk I take in the shoes of another. I love to shine a light on dark places and enlighten others to another perspective. I have found that when I dig deep I can uncover hidden treasures.

“I woke to a day that was bright and crisp. The sun rose through my bedroom window in an orange light and I tried to let its happy glow fill me up, wanting desperately to absorb every bit of winter rays that this day was gifting.”
Susie Newman, Lost Souls Café

“I miss our bedroom talks. I miss the nights when we'd stay awake for hours being silly. I miss Sunday mornings when I crawled into her bed, the two of us side by side, whispering dreams and secrets, our bare mosquito-bitten legs tangled in bedsheets, knobby knees pressed together as we curled around each other in laughter.”
Susie Newman, Eating Yellow Paint

“I knew at that moment that I had learned one of my biggest life lessons, that good people sometimes snap. And a broken person can be fixed.”
Susie Newman, Eating Yellow Paint

“The useless days will add up to something. The shitty waitressing jobs. The hours writing in your journal. The long meandering walks. The hours reading poetry and story collections and novels and dead people’s diaries and wondering about sex and God and whether you should shave under your arms or not. These things are your becoming.”
Cheryl Strayed, Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar

“Anyone who thinks sitting in church can make you a Christian must also think that sitting in a garage can make you a car.”
Garrison Keillor

“There is a colossal change that happens to a woman that has been cheated on and then left. Although the change is massive it is a slow gradual process that happens as the days move on. Like a metamorphosis, you begin to develop into something new.”
Susie Newman, Lost Souls Café

Susie Newman, Lost Souls Café

“Sometimes a secret can keep you from breathing right. Secrets are heavy things and when you got such a big one sitting on your chest it's hard to exhale. Just by telling one person you can kind of lighten the load and breathe just a bit easier.”
Susie Newman, Lost Souls Café
