From Daydreams to Dark Magic: Unmasking the Inspiration Behind The Devil You Wished For

That's a fantastic idea! Goodreads is the perfect place to connect with readers. Since your most popular book is a fantasy novel, "The Devil You Wished For," I'll craft a blog post that leans into the world-building, inspiration, and personal journey of a fantasy author.

Here is a blog post draft you can use for your Aradhya Sharma Goodreads account. Feel free to tweak the tone, details, or call-to-action to fit your exact style!

From Daydreams to Dark Magic: Unmasking the Inspiration Behind The Devil You Wished For
Hello, lovely readers!

It’s Aradhya Sharma here, and I'm so excited to finally get a chance to connect with you all here on Goodreads. I see so many of you have added The Devil You Wished For to your shelves, and that truly means the world to me. Thank you for diving into the dark, magical world I've created!

Today, I wanted to pull back the curtain just a little and share where the spark for this whole journey began. Every writer knows that a book, especially a fantasy novel, starts not with a single idea, but a collection of whispers, half-formed images, and questions that won't leave you alone.

The Seed of the Story
For me, the entire story began with a single, unsettling thought: What if a desire, no matter how pure, was tainted by the source you had to consult to achieve it?

I've always been fascinated by the classic tales of bargains and wishes—Faust, genies, deals with the devil. But I didn't want a simple morality play. I wanted a protagonist who genuinely believes they are doing the right thing, only to find that the price of their heroism is a soul-deep corruption, one that's far more insidious than a simple contract.

This led me to craft a world where magic isn't a neutral force, but something predatory, demanding a specific, personal toll from its user. My main character, who desperately needs this power to protect what they love, has to continually wrestle with whether the protection is worth the person they are slowly becoming.

World-Building: More Than Just Maps
The world of The Devil You Wished For didn't spring from a flash of inspiration; it was built, brick by painstaking brick, from a mash-up of ancient history and my own daydreams.

I spent months researching various historical mythologies around covenants and dark entities. I found myself particularly drawn to the subtle, almost bureaucratic evil—the kind that operates with cold, logical precision rather than just fire and brimstone. This is what led to the unique structure of the 'Pacts' in the book. It’s not about grand sacrifice; it’s about slow, subtle erosion.

And, of course, the setting! Every good fantasy novel needs a place you can get lost in. I imagined a kingdom constantly battling a creeping darkness, a place of perpetual twilight and ancient forests that feel less like a haven and more like a set of hungry jaws. It’s the kind of place where a flickering candle feels like the most precious form of rebellion.

What’s Next on My Reading List?
When I'm not writing, I’m reading! It's how I keep the creative well full. Lately, I've been on a kick for dark, character-driven SFF (Science Fiction/Fantasy). I recently finished a brilliant high-fantasy novel that completely subverted my expectations for the 'chosen one' trope. I'll be posting a quick non-spoiler review on my profile soon!

Now, I want to hear from you!

If you've read The Devil You Wished For, what was the moment, character, or twist that surprised you the most?

If it's still on your "Want to Read" shelf, what are you most hoping to find inside its pages?

Drop a comment below and let's talk about the dark side of magic!

Happy Reading,

Aradhya Sharma
