Lorde’s right – we shouldn’t work when our pets die
Alice and her dog, Basil, who died in 2017 (Picture: Alice Wright) It has been reported this week that singer Lorde has delayed the release of her new album because of bereavement.
She has considered that the time and effort that needs to be devoted to her career right now will be affected by grief – and who can blame her? The loss of a loved one can be devastating and your work can most definitely suffer while you come to terms with it.
The fact that Lorde is grieving for her beloved dog Pearl, shouldn’t make any difference.

Unhappy Birthday Morrissey! Celebrate the singer’s best lines as he turns 59 today
It seems wrong to wish him a happy birthday… (Picture: Kyle Gustafson For The Washington Post via Getty) It can be very hard for fans to love Morrissey sometimes.
The Smiths: 30 years since the split and still the best British band? Once praised for his wry phrasing and alternative look on life and love (and of course being the frontman for long-lamented band The Smiths) he now seems to spend his time coming up with odd statements and outrageous viewpoints, each more controversial than the la...

Great Goths (Picture: Getty, Rex/Shutterstock) Crank up the dry ice and put Bauhaus on loud because it’s time to celebrate: 22 May 2018 is the ninth annual World Goth Day (WGD).
A date that began as a social media idea has been embraced globally with parties, events and gigs taking place – all attended by exquisitely dressed Goths of course.

You can’t really rush it (Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk) After the initial rush of excitement at the first contraction, or your waters breaking, labour soon settles down into a rather boring period of waiting for most expectant parents.

After all, what’s not to love about sunshine and being able to spend time outdoors?
Well, while you’re basking in a sunny park or drinking in a warm beer garden, do spare a thought for those of us trapped inside a stifling, sealed room, with the windows shut and wet flannels pressed to our faces.
For we’ve been taken hostage by hay fever.
And it’s putting us through hell in a million tiny ways.
1. Let’s st...March 23, 2018
Poo, sex and weaning: the top ten topics discussed by new mums
Time for a chat (Picture: Liberty Antonia Sadler for Metro.co.uk) Thrust into the strange and confusing world of motherhood new mums will seek out others in the same boat to share concerns and discuss their little ones.
During such an odd time it’s only natural that you’d want reassurance about the new situation you find yourself in.
Whether online, in a baby-group or a coffee-shop gathering the conversation would be pointless and confusing to the uninitiated.
In fact most of it would seem s...

Celebrate the spring equinox with these 8 traditions – egg laying bunnies to the Horned God
Stonehenge is a popular spot to celebrate the spring equinox (Picture: Chris Clor/Getty) On Tuesday 20 March days and nights will be of equal length across the globe.
This balancing act of a 12 hour day and 12 hour night is called an equinox (equal night in Latin, fact fans) and the spring or vernal equinox happens at exactly 16.15 when the sun passes the celestial equator and the earth’s axis is perpendicular to its rays.
But this special day isn’t just an astronomical event, it also marks t...

It’s an island that’s worth discovering (Picture: Getty) Jersey: the biggest of the Channel Islands and home to old TV detective Bergerac.
As it’s a tiny bit of Britain in the Channel, I thought there was little more to discover on a recent break there.
6 reasons why Jersey makes the perfect island break But, upon arriving, I was stunned to hear of the island’s strange history, its independent administration and a huge selection of odd facts.
