The author, Vinod Kaul, of Kashmiri extraction, was born in New Delhi in 1951 when his father moved there to take up a Government job. His father’s career in the Foreign Service exposed Vinod to the world at an early age. This included
postings in Cairo, New York, Beirut, and Tokyo.

He completed his education at the prestigious St. Stephen’s College, Delhi and the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Vinod had dreamt of becoming an astronomer, but was thrown,instead, into the hurly-burly of the world of business management,which he entered somewhat reluctantly. He worked with a
