Thanks so much! (Sorry I didn't see this question until now).

The best advice I can give is 1) Know your ending, and 2) Leave yourself some space on how you get there. I know many writers who have it all planned out - and with historical fiction, history itself is a wonderful map. But I like to leave myself room to explore and discover while I write. There are always gems in the research that are waiting to be found, polished, and revealed. Whenever I'm bored by a piece I'm writing, I know I have to find another way to tell the story, because if I'm bored, the reader is sure to be. So know what story you want to tell, but give yourself latitude on how you tell it.(less)

Hey Steven. That's ten kinds of lovely to hear - I'll take questions like this one everyday!

I'm closing in on the third Colossus book right now, the first half of which runs concurrent with Four Emperors. I don't have a date yet, but it will definitely be out this year.

Like you, I'm a sucker for good Roman novels - Colleen McCullough, Steven Saylor, Simon Scarrow, all joy, And every book Mary Beard writes.

One thing you can always do for authors you like - reviews. Here, on Amazon, on Audible, wherever you get books. They really do make difference, and good, bad, or indifferent, authors always appreciate reviews.

Cheers, and thanks!

Moonshadow In A Minor Key

My wife was playing Cat Stevens in the car this morning as she took the kids to school. Our 10 year old daughter, a fan of all things horror - even the stuff she's not allowed to see - was frightened by the song "Moonshadow."

I thought about the lyrics, and I can see her point:

Oh, I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moon shadow, moonshadow---
Leapin and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonsh

“Chaos comes in multitudinous forms. Events like fires, storms, or diseases might descend in a moment and create tumultus — a legal state recognized by the Senate, wherein normal procedures are suspended in favour of decisive action.”
David Blixt, Colossus: The Four Emperors

“Remember, he is in the newspaper business, and that consists of doing just two things: informing the public and selling papers. Always aim for the first, never forget the second.”
David Blixt, What Girls Are Good For: A Novel of Nellie Bly

“Not a good answer, love.”
“But – madonna forgive me, but – it was a woman.”
David Blixt, The Master of Verona

“May we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion. ”
Dwight D. Eisenhower

“We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace—business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.

They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.

Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred.”
Franklin D. Roosevelt

“I would give you my soul in a blackberry pie; and a knife to cut it with.”
Dorothy Dunnett, The Disorderly Knights

“I wish to God,” said Gideon with mild exasperation, “that you’d talk—just once—in prose like other people.”
Dorothy Dunnett, The Game of Kings

“Facts are the soil from which the story grows. Imagination is a last resort.”
Dorothy Dunnett

Jim Duggins Thanks for this invitation to join you. Having finished the novel, THE POWER: A NOVEL OF VOODOO, the first of five books based upon an actual 19th century voodoo queen in America, I'm now taking a sabbatical to finish a contemporary novel, THE CHOIRBOY. I enjoyed your video and look forward to more of your work.

David Just emerging from writing a new novel, before submerging again into edits and the next. I always forget to do things like update Goodreads. But I saw your name, and had to make the connection. Thanks for being my friend.
