Stepan Andriyovych Bandera (Ukrainian: Степан Андрійович Бандера, Polish: Stepan Andrijowycz Bandera) was a leader in the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (Організація Українських Націоналістів, ОУН) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. He remains a controversial figure, in part due to his apparent collaboration with the Nazis against the Soviet Army. The term "Banderist" was used to label many of those imprisoned in GULAG during the late-Stalinist regime, and was most widely applied to any Ukrainian charged under Article 58 as a political offender, whether or not they had any actual connection to the ОУН or Bandera.
