Mack Mulluncey's Blog

I'm just a girl
I had an interview on blogcritics.org for my tour and the post opens this way: In the novel Euthanasia, Mack Mulluncey tackles some really difficult issues. He writes here about the experience.... Ouch. I guess that’s what happens when you pick a somewhat gender-ambiguous pseudonym. In any case, below are some snippets from the interview. What was the hardest part of writing your book? There were some scenes that were incredibly difficult for me to write. One that comes to mind immediately is when Alex, who had ...

Interview with a character: Tobin Bartell
I wish I could take credit for this idea, but actually I got it during the course of my blog tour when one of the hosts told me that I could possibly interview one of the characters from Euthanasia for a guest post. I don’t know if I’ll end up doing that for the tour, but I do know I loved the idea enough to steal it for my blog (in fact, that was a huge motivation for creating this blog). I’m not above talking to myself—I do it all the time since I work from home—so I thought, ...

What is Euthanasia anyway?
I have to admit, I love my novel Euthanasia. I lived with this story and these people for so long, it’s hard not to. I did an interview with Review From Here for my blog tour, where I talk a lot about the story and how I came up with the idea. Here are some snippets: Could you please tell us a little about your book? Euthanasia is about a group of people in an anti-abortion group who are plotting to kill an abortion doctor. But when you look at who they really are, you ...

Review redux
So, just the other day I talked about how you can’t really review art. I still believe that, but after I wrote that post, I noticed that someone had just reviewed Euthanasia as part of my blog tour. Given my views about reviews, I really shouldn’t even be reading this stuff...but alas, curiosity and cat killing and all that. The review was done by Hayley Kolb at www.hangingoffthewire.com and she had very nice things to say about the novel: This book could be a very controversial book on many levels, and it will not be ...

Definitely not William Shakespeare
I was quite the poet when I was a kid—quite the bad poet. But still, I enjoyed writing poetry for several years when I was a teenager, and I even managed to convince a few people that my poems were worthy of publication. Nowadays, I look back at my poems and think, what utter and complete bullshit this was. But they still have a special place in my heart, which is why I recently released them (at least the ones that weren’t too embarrassing) in the collection Poetry from the Bowels of Teenage Angst. ...

Sock puppet theater
There’s been a lot of talk lately among writers about the perils of fake book reviews—specifically the fact that indie author John Locke bought hundreds of reviews for his novels and traditionally-published writer R.J. Ellory got busted not only writing favorable reviews for his own work, but orchestrating a campaign of sock puppet theater to give bad reviews to authors that he apparently feels threatened by. I have to admit that at first blush, I was kind of annoyed by both of these stories. I thought Locke’s transgression was a little shady and not ...

Tangos with the muse
I originally wrote this as a guest blog for a stop on my blog tour. I really enjoyed writing it because I talked about how I came up with the idea for Euthanasia—and how inspiration happens in general. *** The muse has a mind of her own; every writer knows that. She’ll show up anytime and anywhere, with a complete disregard for what else you have going on at the time. And I’ve found that when she comes around, and she wants to tango, I need to put my dancing shoes on and follow her lead. ...

Fame? Not for this dame.
I’m currently doing a blog tour for my novel Euthanasia to try to get some attention for it. The tour is being organized by Pump Up Your Book, so I recently did an interview for their site. Here’s a snippet: You just got word that your book has received the 2012 NY Times Bestselling Book Award and you have to attend the ceremony to give an acceptance speech. Anyone who’s anyone will be there and it’s your shot for stardom. What would you say and who would you thank? A: I know this is ...

Blog schmog
I’ve never been someone that you would call an early adopter...of anything. Actually, calling me a late adopter is an insult to actual late adopters. So, in my typical fashion, when it comes to this blogging thing to promote my work, I’ve been pretty slow about it. Even putting up a proper author web site at all has not been an idea that I’ve entirely embraced. My name is Mack Mulluncey and I’m a Luddite. In fact, I’m such a Luddite that I don’t have a cell phone. That’s right; I’m probably about the last ...
