Heads Up, We're Moving

Dear Subscribers,

After much deliberation and discernment, I have decided to switch my newsletter publishing platform from Substack to Ghost.

There has been significant debate about publishing on Substack, with strong feelings about whether or not people should stay or go. There have been concerns about how Substack uses the 10% fees, who is allowed to publish on the platform, and its future around “free speech.”

This is not a “You should go too” shade and shame post. Folks will land where they w...

Those Damn Flowers, A Story for The Moth

Last night, I hoped to make the stage at The Moth StorySlam in San Francisco, but it was not in the cards. 10 great stories were chosen from “The Bag,” and even though I was not selected, it was a great night. I am so grateful for those who showed up on the off chance I got picked. Thanks fam!

I will try again* should the theme make sense, but here is the story that I was going to tell on the theme, “Oblivious,” about Lucille Tobiassen and the incident about The Flowers.

Lucille and Those Damn Fl...

A New Gig and Snowy Gifts to All Subscribers

As some have heard, Zephyr Point Conference Center just announced on FB, IG, and BSky that I have joined the team as their Church Relations and Development Officer. Located in Zephyr Cove, NV, just past South Lake Tahoe and on the banks of Lake Tahoe, I am thrilled to begin my time with them.

I grew up attending Zephyr Point Conference Center, which has been the backdrop for my spiritual formation for a long time. Like many church camps and conference centers, it has experienced the peaks and va...

The Spiritual Gift of Resistance

I used this rewrite during this weekend’s online “Lost & Found” worship service with Presbyterian Peace Fellowship. This is my second time joining them; it was lovely and healing. Check them out if you are seeking such a community during these tumultuous times.

I wrote this for people to use, so if you would like to use this, please feel free to use it with attribution. Here is the Google Doc and you can also find it posted on BlueSky, Instagram, and Facebook.

Your financial and viewing support ma...

The + Friday + Five: 02.07.25

The Friday + Five* is a brief list of things I have found meaningful, challenging, joyful, soothing, or quirky from the week. Some weeks will have themes, while others will feel like they were gathered by a raccoon hyped up on six shots of espresso. You’ve been warned.

Your Friday Five: 02.07.25

I have recently been at a loss for words with 83 posts in draft form sitting in my Substack posts tab. Every time I open it up, there they are, their witty titles taunting and shaming me like Netflix does...

Living Deeply as I Enter My Mr. Miyagi Era

I have not published anything in about three weeks because, like so many, I am still figuring out how I will not just survive these next years but thrive and make a positive impact on those around me and the world. Yes, I have a few projects in the works, but I have also been struggling with what I can offer to the discourse. In many ways, the strategy of the White House of raining down punch after punch has had the desired effect — overwhelming to the point of paralysis.

I trust we will each em...

Progressive Except for Palestine

What if, 18 months ago, self-identified “progressive” Christian leaders and organizations were asked the hypothetical question, “Would remain silent in the face of a US-backed militarized genocide and ethnic cleansing of hundreds of thousands of people?”

How many of us would pause, contemplate, and land on, “It depends.”?

I choose to believe that most folks, if not all, would quickly and unequivocally respond, “No, of course, we would stand against such things.”

Yet here we are approaching that 18-...

BTS: Three Adaptations and Three Intentions

One of my favorite comfort mugs, one that was in my Chinese-side grandparent’s kitchen for decades.

Hey all,

I hope you don’t mind me always saying “thank you for your support” but, seriously — thank you for your support :-)

As promised, this is a first of many Behind-the-Scenes posts that I have committed sharing in 2025.

When Happy New Year is Anything But

NOTE: I have the privilege to publicly share this mental health journey with little possibility of personal or professional ramifications. Many of you do not have such a luxury. I wish you did, so in my sharing, I hope you feel seen.

Last week, I shared a bit about my latest depression episode and just want to let folks know that if you are also having a hard time embracing the “happy” in Happy New Year, I feel ya so much.

As we have entered these final few days of 2024, we now greet 2025, deeply...
